Layered Richness – Harbourview House by Penman Brown

As a partial renovation, Harbourview House sees the reinvigoration of the existing kitchen and bathrooms to inject a relevant presence and celebrate key integral elements of the home. Penman Brown layers richness and texture while connecting to a contemporary sensibility and imbedded sense of luxury.

Situated in Sydney’s inner north, Harbourview House is set in Manly and sees the renovation of the key functional and most highly trafficked areas of the home – the kitchen and bathroom spaces. The resulting efforts see layered textures, finishes and patterns add a welcomed richness while also sitting within a light and luxury focussed approach. Taking inspiration from the home’s setting and its adjacency to the ocean, an overarching sense of calm and composure is brought inward and reinterpreted through materiality and palette. There is a meditative elementto these spaces, whether in the act of creation within the kitchenor the moments of reflection and recharge within the bathrooms. Ensuring this was carried through into the spatial qualities and overall feel was imperative. Penman Brown combines a considered depth with a welcomed lightness and creates a series of mini destinations within the one home.

Built by Boon Building, Harbourview House is the injection of a familiar opulence within the existing home. As home to a young family and their three sons, the brief needed to provide an inbuilt robustness while also allowing for integrated storage and support spaces. The result sees a kitchen with multiple height seating scenarios and a streamlined approach with minimal fixtures and fittings to reinforce the space as a place of calm order. The use of honed marble further reinforces the enduring nature of the space, offering a resilience and hardwearing front to all the workings of the family kitchen, while its subtle veining adds an interesting and uniquely patterned element.

The bathroom, ensuite and powder room take on a similar approach, combining natural stone and light-coloured ceramic tiles in a banded approach. At the core of these spaces is a shared philosophy of restoration, calm and luxury, echoing the home’s location. Through the addition of texture against smoother elements, a welcomed balance fills each of the spaces, while black tapware and fixture details offer an element of refinement and sharpness.
