LOEWE’s New Sydney Flagship Store
An immersive luxury environment, the LOEWE Sydney flagship store is a seamless blend of art, design and craftsmanship, a pure reflection of the esteemed house’s ethos.
Founded in 1846, LOEWE is one of the world’s most storied luxury houses. Its refined approach to fashion – focusing on craftsmanship, creativity and expression – has positioned the brand not just as a maker of timeless objects, but also as a cultural force. It is fitting, then, that its new flagship store in the Sydney CBD responds to the bustle of the city with quiet confidence. “The textures, the light, the rhythm of the rooms – it feels like everything is telling a story,” says Aidan Anderson, founder of The Local Project, who recently had a preview tour of the store. “It’s sensory and serene.”
The LOEWE flagship honours the experience of luxury, encouraging visitors to pause, connect with the unique design language of the brand and gradually discover resonant pieces. The journey begins at the storefront. Adorned with handcrafted blue ceramic tiles that in certain lights reveal hints of green, the facade evokes the essence of the Pacific Ocean. Visitors approaching the store feel a sense of calm and movement, which is enhanced as they continue inside.
“Walking into the store feels like walking through a collector’s home, not just a retail store,” notes Anderson. “Artworks by John Minton, Mahesh Baliga, Hylton Nel and Andrés Anza add a soulfulness and playfulness that balance the fashion.” The paintings and sculptures also express the LOEWE perspective as it applies to the wider creative industry, embodying a deep knowledge and appreciation of the arts.
To unite the various works, the walls and floor serve as foundational elements of the interior design. The walls, gently curved, allow for effortless transitions between spaces while bespoke wool rugs by British textile artist John Allen build upon the vibrancy of the ceramics. “It’s like walking through a landscape painting,” says Anderson.
Throughout, colour references the coast and ocean, from deep blues and muted greens to sandy neutrals. Each hue develops the dimensional detail of the space: working with the curves of the architecture in the same way that light enlivens water, they establish a dynamic visual rhythm. “They soften the design while adding a crafted precision,” says Anderson. “It’s the perfect tension between form and feeling.” Natural materials including oak and stone complement the coastal palette while strengthening the store’s connection to nature.
Embracing tonal softness and sophistication, the LOEWE Sydney flagship brings the spirit of the coast and ocean to the CBD. From the motion of its forms to its natural tactility, the store offers more than just items for purchase – it provides a multi-sensory experience.
