A Family Home – Round Choreography by mckimm
Evolving from a symmetrical design, Round Choreography is a playful geometric home with a familial tenor. With architecture, interior design and styling undertaken by mckimm, the structural house sees a clear design intent rigorously executed.
Settled into the leafy suburb of Malvern, Round Choreography is named in homage to the floorplan of the home. Emerging from a symmetrical blueprint of defined zones, the house retains its geometric identity, showcasing a newly symphonic arrangement of forms and spaces that particularly celebrate a circular motif. The home’s name evokes the idea of togetherness, aptly representing the spirit of collaboration that permeates the entire structure.
Round Choreography testifies to the connection formed between the clients and mckimm, as well as the proficiency of the company’s communication across disciplines. The completed home expresses an understanding of the residential habits that shape the clients’ lifestyle, offering unparalleled levels of support. As architect, interior designer and builder, mckimm’s construction team shares an intimate knowledge of the design intent, enabling them to efficiently undertake strenuous tasks in order to deliver the desired outcome.
Through a combination of unique focal points and understated details, a balanced approach to architecture is proposed. The boldest design element – a round cut-out in a concrete wall, visible through the entryway’s sightline – exerts a magnetic influence on the space. Similarly, a circular skylight above the staircase accentuates different angles of sunlight in response to the progressing day; the feature is then repeated next to the outdoor shower to highlight the visual properties of the recycled brickwork. In contrast, small additions collectively refine the home – parapets without flashing, windows stretching from the floor to ceiling and blinds complemented by pelmets.
Befitting its function as a family residence, Round Choreography follows an intuitive spatial concept.
Befitting its function as a family residence, Round Choreography follows an intuitive spatial concept. A mud room fitted with a laundry unit acts as a transitional point between the garage and the remainder of the house, welcoming occupants in from the outdoors. Introducing a lower level to the architecture of the home, mckimm establishes a calming place of retreat, an entertainment aspect with an area dedicated to wellness. Moreover, a central internal courtyard draws natural light and air into the space, creating the illusion of being above ground.
The practicality of Round Choreography extends to its material character. The house features a durable palette comprised of concrete, timber and recycled brickwork to express a commitment to longevity whilst celebrating an aesthetic rawness. Polished concrete floors with hydronic heating meet walls of the same material, creating a consistent architectural envelope and a sense of warmth through layered textures of timber and brickwork.
Round Choreography captures the excitement of embedding oneself in a location. Through a considered response and consistent material palette, mckimm ensures that the light-filled home is only the beginning for the growing family.
