Immersive Storytelling – The Whiskey Room by Simone Haag
As a vessel for the owners’ collected treasures, The Whiskey Room represents a collection of spaces that combine the nostalgia of a life well-travelled with many treasured items acquired along the way. Simone Haag curates a collection of pieces that work to enhance the existing, creating a unique destination within the heritage home, emboldened by a unique approach.
Each home is an opportunity to showcase the personalities of those who live there, while also being a place to create a distinctive world that the owner can invite others into to share it with. As an immersion amongst furniture, art and lighting that speaks to an individual style, the spaces then become exhibitions in a way. The Whiskey Room is an almost accelerated version of that concept. Guided by Simone Haag, the owners worked to transform a series of existing and prominently located spaces within their storied home, layering in even more elements that further animate the volumes. Located in Armdale, the grand historic home speaks to the original heritage, with this latest layering endowing the current custodians the ability to insert their piece into its history.
The Whiskey Room encourages a curiosity and sense of discovering, heightening the experience of the home as a result.
While the reworking of the home remains contained to a few rooms, its impact is immense. The decision to focus on a few rooms not only intensifies its resolve but spares its impact from being overshadowed if it were applied throughout the home. Instead, other retreat spaces are kept as such, and the saturation of the curation is contained to key spaces. Within the informal living room, entrance hall and main bedroom, an earth tonality is used as the base, encasing the interior walls in rich tones that set the foundation for the pieces within.
The new works become a completing of a picture, adding to the history of the detailing already expressed through the architecture of the home. Existing pieces collected from travels are combined with new pieces, creating an interesting narrative of expressive forms and geometries brought together through a balanced lens. Each room has its own contrasting colouring that enhances the sentiment of the space, while the additions add a richness, both in their placement and grouping and how they shape the feeling when within. Restoring pieces as well as acquiring additional ones, the result sees an eclectic yet expert combination of old, new, and collected come together.
