Located in Santa Monica, Twentieth embodies a sense of freedom through its connection to the landscape, yet its robust materiality anchors it in place. From the outset, natural elements are woven among the built, balancing soft, strong, open and closed gestures across the site. Somewhat restricted by the size of the allotment, the resulting form retains a sense of generosity and, through drawing attention inward, also creates a sense of privacy. With a focus on incorporating the surrounds into the fabric of the home, Woods + Dangaran encourages an aura of discovery from the outset.

The way in which the landscape interacts with the architecture was an important part of the home’s narrative. Whilst the spaces flow and connect with each other, the internal structure allows for intimate moments. These in-between spaces encourage moments of reflection, whilst others direct attention outward to ensure key reminders of place are ingrained throughout. Taking formation around a central courtyard, the planning allows for a natural separation between passive and active zones.

Warmth plays an important role in how the spaces come together to orchestrate the home’s personality. A contemporary approach replaces ornate detailing and sees joinery conceal junctions, storage and everyday amenities. The curation of furniture, lighting and artwork then adds personalisation whilst also reflecting the function of the space. The deliberate sequencing of spaces calls for an unexpected movement, requiring turns instead of all rooms pivoting off from a central spine.
