Aunament brings a design-conscious sensibility to its range of Christmas ornaments, which not only celebrate an Australian aesthetic, but are produced locally – with a sustainable pedigree.

When design-minded sisters Gabrielle Honan and Kirsten Skvorc were scouting for premium quality Christmas decorations, and found the market was distinctly lacking, they merged their talents and interests to establish Aunament (a portmanteau of Australian and ornament). “We’re a close family and we’ve always enjoyed coming together for celebrations,” Gabrielle says. “We’ve also both got a deep appreciation of good design … those two things were really the creative spark behind Aunament.”

Aunament aims to elevate festive celebrations with its range of beautifully crafted hanging and table ornaments, constructed from brass, stainless steel and painted steel.

Launched last Christmas, Aunament aims to elevate festive celebrations with its range of beautifully crafted hanging and table ornaments, constructed from brass, stainless steel and painted steel in a traditional palette of gold, silver, red (ruby), green (emerald) and blue (sapphire). The brand works with a team of inhouse and Australian industrial designers to create its four ranges: Scribbly, Geo, Bling and Bush. Geo and Bling are minimalist in nature, incorporating geometric, architectural styling to classic Christmas forms like stars, trees and diamonds.

The Scribbly and Bush ranges have a distinct Australian aesthetic, with the former inspired by the zig-zag trails made by moth larvae under the bark of scribbly gums, and the latter featuring iconic fauna like kangaroos, koalas, echidnas and kookaburras, making the pieces ideal for gifting to Aussie expats wanting a reminder of home during the festive season. “We like to think we’re creating products that help people celebrate a really Australian Christmas, incorporating the kind of motifs that are not only cherished by people here but also by Australians working and living in other parts of the world,” says Kirsten. “Next to that aesthetic, there’s also a very strong architectural element, which is seen in pieces that have a lovely geometric composition of form and material.”

“Our star tree topper will definitely elevate a Christmas tree, but it would look equally striking as a Christmas table centrepiece.”

Materiality is a key component of the Aunament range, and underlines the brand’s sustainable nature. “We started with a simple design brief: to create products that are designed and made in Australia, and to fabricate ornaments using excess steel, stainless-steel and brass sheets from local manufacturers,” Gabrielle says. “These offcuts would have otherwise been discarded.”

One of the stand-out products is the star tree topper, a modern metallic incarnation of a traditional star. “We think it’s the most elegant topper we’ve seen,” Kirsten says. “It will definitely elevate a Christmas tree, but it would look equally striking as a Christmas table centrepiece.” Aunament has also expanded its range of tree-shaped ornaments, “from hanging ornaments for a tree through to a stand-alone incarnation that would be suitable to be displayed on a coffee table or reception desk,” she adds. “These are assembled by fusing together two intersecting pieces, which means that they can be folded neatly for ease of storage.”

Longevity was top of mind when creating the range. “Our pieces are made to be long-lasting and something to keep, like a family heirloom.”

Longevity was also top of mind when creating the range. “Our pieces are made to be long-lasting and something to keep, like a family heirloom,” Gabrielle says. In 2024, Aunament will expand its range to incorporate products that will elevate other special occasions and celebrations throughout the year, again working with painted steel, stainless steel and brass.
