The diversity of WOODCUT’s engineered flooring takes full flight in Haig, a Queenslander given a new lease of life in a refreshing, contemporary style by OH Architecture.

Bright and white Hamptons-style reimaginings of classic Queenslanders have become de rigueur in recent years – but the earthy tones and warm timber of Haig, a newly reinvigorated residence in Brisbane, offers a refreshingly imaginative approach to the genre. Key to the home’s singularity are Calluna floorboards from premium flooring house WOODCUT, which has recently opened its first Queensland showroom. Architect and interior designer OH Architecture has harnessed the timeless floorboards in a variety of applications to ground the contemporary design, simultaneously showcasing WOODCUT’s diversity and nodding towards the brand’s extensive product range.

“We chose Calluna for the Haig project as it has a natural yet sleek feel. It paired really well with the organic look of the house and added warmth to the concrete walls, floor and ceiling.”

“Calluna is a rich timber flooring made with a French oak top layer,” says Poppie Kenneally, interior design director of OH Architecture. “We chose this for the Haig project as it has a natural yet sleek feel. It paired really well with the organic look of the house and added warmth to the concrete, walls, floor and ceiling. A particular highlight was the seamless flooring detail into the sunken lounge, which gave a sense of cosy elegance. It was the perfect choice for the project.”

WOODCUT’s ever-growing collection of floorboards seamlessly blends both form and function: a three-layer construction is powered by slow- and fast-growing timbers, enhancing the product’s eco credentials, and the range is offered in a vast spectrum of colours to suit all aesthetics, from blond and mid-tones to darker hues. A wide variety of species expands the options even further: European oak, French oak, European ash and American walnut each bring their own characteristics and quality to the collection.

Showrooms in Victoria, New South Wales and South Australia have firmly established WOODCUT in the vernacular of architects, interiors’ experts and home owners in southern Australia. The recent launch of a new showroom in Brisbane’s Fortitude Valley, shared with tile and stone maker Signorino, offers buyers further north the opportunity to experience the sturdy, beautiful quality of the company’s flooring in situ. As WOODCUT embeds itself in the Queensland market, it’s working closely with local architects such as OH Architecture to reach locals and contribute to projects such as Haig.

The Haig project’s concrete walls, impactful curves and open-plan design work in harmony with the organic and grounded Calluna floorboards, which bring the outdoors in to establish warmth and liveliness within the home. A wall-length door opens the space to the elements, and the Calluna’s French oak materiality seamlessly melds the interior with the landscape. WOODCUT’s signature UV coating, designed to be cured by UV light, offers an extra layer of protection from the activity within the home.
