Studio Bright ensures an open connection is achieved both internally and externally in Maitland Bay House, balancing the robust resilience required to thrive within Australia’s bushland. The home serves as an expression of rudimentary shelter while embodying a refined and thoughtful design.

Maitland Bay House is crafted to adapt to the amplified weather conditions of its remote site. Studio Bright enhances the living experience by integrating practical elements into the architectural design, thereby connecting the occupants more closely to the environment of Bouddi National Park. The dual-wing layout creates a sheltered garden space nestled further into the home, offering protection from the elements while uniquely connecting to both the forest and the ocean.

The design approach carefully responds to both the environment and the existing building, navigating challenging site elements while prioritising northern light and outward views. Named for its expansive views of Maitland Bay, the sloping site and complexities of bushfire regulations were important considerations, guiding the placement and accessibility of the dwelling. The choice of materials underscores the home’s protective role, complemented by openings and timber linings that maximise natural light.

Maintaining permeability was key to avoid a bunker-like appearance and ensure the natural setting remained the focal point. The design balances creating a retreat with fostering moments of togetherness, reflecting a flexible layout. The form is structured into two distinct wings, offering a bespoke entry sequence that features mature Angophora trees. A transparent breezeway enhances movement and frames ocean views that extend through to the street. Serving as an open verandah and corridor connector, the breezeway uplifts the overall spatial experience.

Maitland Bay House aligns with its coastal context, where the surroundings serve as the guiding inspiration. Studio Bright achieves a subtle integration that minimises environment impact, fostering a sense of immersion for the owners.
