Grounded in a deep connection to light and nature, Terrace House blends privacy with bold design. The home’s distinctive street presence defines its identity, complemented by an unexpected internal softness.

Jolson creates a unique sanctuary in the heart of bustling inner Melbourne – a retreat unto itself. Terrace House was designed around the central garden, aiming for a delicate balance between connection and seclusion. The surrounding environment played a key role in creating a sense of separation and buffering along the built edges. The client’s desire for a home that harmonises their eclectic taste and collected pieces within contemporary spaces drove Jolson to emphasise both personal expression as well as an overall sense of calm throughout the residence. A seamless flow from indoors to outdoors was essential, allowing the garden to engage the senses throughout the day and across seasons.

Large windows and skylights flood the living spaces with natural light. Features such as the meandering stream and diverse plants not only enhance the connection to nature but also draw attention to the building’s garden spaces. Spanning four levels, the home maintains a spacious feel, with a central spiral staircase that brings light from above and serves as a unifying element. The integration of nature influenced every design decision, evident in both the interior and architectural elements. The staircase, strategically positioned and sculptural in design, serves to shield the living areas from the western sun while filtering light through its treads.

In crafting a tranquil home, careful selection of materials and furnishings helps to soothe and mediate any contrasts within. The chosen palette also ensures a timeless appeal, complemented by custom furniture and textured layering that introduce colour and vibrancy throughout the space. The strategic placement of terraces also enhances both views and a connection to nature, while thoughtful privacy features delineate the boundaries between indoors and outdoors.
