Sanders & King thoughtfully reimagines a 1930s maisonette, transforming its formerly compartmentalised layout into a cohesive, light-filled family home. The designer reconfigures the internal plan from a previous renovation, replacing a maze-like design with an open series of spaces that prioritise flow and ease of movement.

Malvern 1 Residence integrates old and new elements by considering the existing structural features to prepare the home for future living. The heritage property needed to be modernised to align with the current owners’ vision for space and connectivity. One of the main challenges of updating such an enduring double-brick home is finding the right balance between preserving its solidity and making impactful adjustments. To achieve this, Sanders & King prioritised a design that harmonises practicality with a sense of openness.

Across both levels, the integration of warm, textured materials is key to creating inviting spaces.

The dwelling features a cohesive flow between its two levels. The ground floor underwent a significant transformation, featuring a new entryway that sets the tone for the entire residence. Key spaces like a formal lounge, expansive kitchen and mudroom now serve as focal points, and essential back-of-house functions – such as the butler’s pantry, laundry and storage – are discreetly concealed for a clean aesthetic. Steel-framed windows and doors add an artisanal touch, framing connecting corridors and openings. Generous hallways also guide movement from the entry into the dining and kitchen areas, ultimately leading to the expanded living space at the rear.

Skylights have been strategically placed throughout the home to maximise natural light. The design principles from the lower level extend to the upper level, where the main bedroom suite has been transformed from a dark, confined space into a luxurious retreat. A dramatic marble arch leads into the shower area, enhancing the sense of grandeur while honouring the residence’s original character. Across both levels, the integration of warm, textured materials is key to creating inviting spaces. European oak timber flooring, marble benchtops and handmade Moroccan Zellige tiles contribute richness and tactile interest. Meanwhile, bronzed metals, soft-limed American oak veneer and complementary tones in the joinery strike a balance between heritage charm and contemporary elegance.

Malvern 1 Residence embraces a sense of lightness, both in its open spaces and in the colour palette, while still honouring its historical roots.
