Inspired by 1970s Italian lounges, the Billo modular sofa system – designed by Adam Goodrum for NAU – combines classic elegance with modern versatility.

When renowned Australian industrial designer Adam Goodrum sat down with Richard Munao, the visionary founder and managing director of Cult, the outcome was always going to be something special. “We aimed to develop a super comfortable and versatile modular sofa collection that exudes a relaxed, friendly aesthetic – something distinctly different from anything currently offered in the NAU collection,” says Goodrum of the collaboration for Cult’s in-house brand. “We wanted to design something that would provide our customers with a unique seating experience,” adds Munao.

Billo fulfils that brief perfectly. The modular sofa system has a relaxed, friendly aesthetic, where pillowy voluptuous forms, an integrated bolster and relaxed tailoring combine to provide a deep sense of comfort. The collection – its name reflects the sofa’s billowing shapes – includes an array of different modules that can stand alone or be configured in various ways to suit different spaces. The design was heavily influenced by Italian lounges from the 1970s. “I have a deep appreciation for vintage Italian sofas, and their elegant and timeless design provided a rich source of inspiration,” says Goodrum. “I wanted to capture the essence of those classic forms while infusing them with a modern touch, ensuring they meet contemporary needs and preferences.”

The design process began with the armchair, with Goodrum spending extensive periods thinking and sketching before moving to detailed CAD drawings. “We created production drawings and developed prototypes, refining the look, tailoring and comfort through multiple iterations,” he recalls. “We started with the armchair – the most complex piece – as its design elements informed the rest of the modules. The corner module was developed last to ensure cohesion across the collection.”

The designer confesses to stepping out of his comfort zone for Billo, eschewing his passion for precise geometry to embrace more organic forms. “This required a deep understanding of fabrics and sofa construction to create interesting and comfortable shapes,” he reflects. “Overcoming these challenges involved a lot of trial and error but, ultimately, it allowed us to achieve a unique and appealing design.”

Goodrum envisages the versatile Billo in a variety of spaces. “Its adaptable design ensures it can fit seamlessly into a range of environments. Whether in a family home, a stylish apartment or a professional setting, it meets the needs of various users. I hope people will appreciate how the Billo visually enhances their space while offering user-friendly functionality and great comfort.”
