Discreetly positioned behind a restored, century-old heritage facade, Campbell Parade Apartment commands uninterrupted 180-degree views of Australia’s most iconic shoreline: Bondi Beach. Yet despite its coveted address, the home embraces a sense of privacy and serenity.

Bondi is a lively beachside suburb where tourists, sunseekers and local fitness enthusiasts bring the streets to life year-round. In contrast, this thoughtfully designed residence is a refuge – a cocooning retreat from the vibrant energy just beyond its windows. The project is a collaborative expression of craft and discipline: Lawless & Meyerson led the interior architecture, design and styling, carrying a holistic vision from structure to the smallest detail, while MHNDU helmed the architecture. The brief called for a space defined by calm, seamlessly linking the charm of the building’s original Arts & Crafts character with a refined contemporary sensibility. The result is a relaxed, ocean-inspired haven, carefully balanced through texture, tone and craftsmanship.

Scandinavian sensibilities guided the interior approach – light palettes to lift mood and wellbeing, balanced by a Nordic warmth that shapes the home’s atmosphere.

Light timbers, tactile stones, natural linens, wool and sisal ground the palette, supported by subtle gestures of marble that nod to the ever-shifting sea. This layered approach keeps the interiors bright and breezy in summer yet warm and enveloping when Bondi’s coastal winds roll in. The decor brings together custom furniture by Lawless & Meyerson, vintage pieces and designs from local and international makers. Limewashed oak flooring in a classic herringbone pattern runs through the living spaces and bedrooms, while limestone laid in the same arrangement elevates the bathrooms. Sisal and heavy wool rugs add texture underfoot, and walls are finished in soft paint tones. Joinery is crafted from Elton Group Eveneer with hardware from Spark & Burnish. In the kitchen, the island’s antique-finish stone introduces a tactile patina designed to age gracefully over time.

Despite its coastal setting, Bondi can become cool and windswept; therefore, tactile materials and considered lighting ensure the apartment feels intimate and nurturing throughout all the seasons.

The spatial journey reinforces a narrative of quiet transition.

The spatial journey reinforces a narrative of quiet transition. From the split-level entry, occupants pass a guest bedroom and bathroom before ascending to the open-plan living, dining and kitchen areas. Here, the original bay window overlooking the Pacific Ocean becomes the focal point. Framed by a graceful archway, a custom banquette creates an inviting dining nook beneath soaring 3.6-metre ceilings. It is a powerful moment where the building’s history and contemporary detail converge.

In the kitchen, functional elements are concealed behind timber joinery, allowing the space to perform without disturbing the home’s sense of calm. It reads as finely crafted furniture: a working kitchen that doesn’t feel like one. Upstairs, the main bedroom offers elevated seclusion. Soft neutral finishes, a timber-veneer wardrobe and tactile rugs establish a grounded, timeless atmosphere. A custom headboard upholstered in rich Dedar fabric is flanked by Oluce Spider lamps. The adjoining ensuite features rendered walls, limestone flooring, a timber vanity and a sculptural freestanding bath in a soothing hue.

Designing so close to the ocean presented challenges – from managing light within an east–west orientated floor plan to specifying corrosion-resistant materials. Architects MHNDU introduced angled blades to reflect natural light deeper into the plan, while robust natural materials were chosen for longevity in the coastal environment.

Sustainability and inclusive design underpin the project. Vintage furnishings including a repurposed Wassily chair and a 1930s carved Swedish Monk chair reduce environmental impact while adding storied charm. Smart technology supports accessibility through touch panels and voice activation.

The result is a relaxed, ocean-inspired haven, carefully balanced through texture, tone and craftsmanship.

Campbell Parade Apartment is a holistic response to place – a home that balances the exhilaration of its iconic setting with the restorative qualities of thoughtful design. It is Bondi living at its most refined – grounded in history, shaped by craftsmanship and entirely in tune with the rhythms of the sea.
