After upending the mattress category and reinventing the sofa bed industry, the team at Koala’s Global R&D Centre in Sydney have set their sights on a new frontier: a revolution in modularity. It’s the brand’s most ambitious step yet towards a furniture future built not on static, fixed pieces but on adaptable systems that grow and shift with their owners.

The modular sofa was once seen as an awkward, fussy and impractical piece, fit only for oversized or unused rooms. But today, modern homes demand versatility and adaptability as spaces, routines and lives continue to change. For Koala, modularity is the answer. It provides the flexibility households require now and the longevity they’ll value over time. With the introduction of the Torquay, Koala positions modular design as the new blueprint for modern living, making it easy to rearrange and reshape living areas, whether that means creating more seating for guests or a growing family, opening up space for activities, or refreshing a room with a new layout.

“Change is the only constant in modern life and furniture that adapts to our needs is a necessity,” says James Whitta, Koala’s chief design officer. “Torquay is designed to exceed every criteria for a modern sofa. We’ve made it outrageously comfortable, impressively functional and effortlessly stylish – it’s the trifecta, and we are so proud of this product.”

At the heart of Koala’s approach is effortlessness and adaptability. “We think it’s pointless to launch new products into cluttered markets unless the products are revolutionary,” says Whitta. “They have to be designed to challenge the status quo.” This is precisely what the Torquay does: with seats, corners and chaises to mix and match, the design allows customers to build a set-up that evolves with them. The sofa also features easy-to-move sections for hassle-free relocation and tool-free connectors that securely lock each piece into place.

But modularity is only half the story. Torquay also introduces Koala’s most advanced comfort engineering. “We’re dedicated to delivering our customers a soft, supportive and long-lasting seated comfort,” says Alexandra Owen, the brand’s head of design.

Built for daily lounging, Torquay offers deep, supportive seats that provide an actual sink-in experience. Its comfort system combines soft-touch fibre pillows, memory foam cushioning, lumbar support and tensioned webbing, creating a seating experience that is both welcoming and supportive over time.

Designed to deliver in every way, the Torquay also features Koala’s QuickSlip easy-to-remove, machine-washable covers. Owen explains that the fabrics were chosen not just for durability, but for their sensory qualities. “We have two high-performing and elegant fabrics for Torquay,” she says. “First, a wonderful cosy basic that is soft, velvety and easy to live with, and then our softest, most cloud-like fabric to date – a luxurious, plush and velvety weave with high-performance credentials.” The covers slide on and off easily, making spills, mess and everyday wear less of an issue.

Owen sums it up simply: “Modular is the perfect design solution for modern life. And by combining it with our bespoke washable fabrics and serious comfort engineering, we believe Torquay is a product that suits everyone’s needs.”
