Steel Window Design expertly combines craftsmanship, quality and innovation to create versatile products using Australian steel. Working across residential and commercial projects, the company draws from years of experience to create custom designs that are as visually striking as they are functional.

The beauty and simplicity of Steel Window Design’s products can be seen in the Albert Park House, specifically in the pivot doors that feature heavily throughout the home. When designing for the residence, Steel Window Design teamed up with Dutch company FritsJurgens, utilising its invisible pivot hinges. The steel pivot doors feature custom pull handles that work to create an easy, boundaryless connection between the living area and outdoor space. The home also features a steel cavity sliding door that is used to divide the living area and bedrooms for noise reduction. The windows and doors are sandblasted, etch primed and double powder-coated, ensuring a high-quality, elegant and timeless appearance.

Working with the client, architect and builder on Albert Park House, Steel Window Design implemented a seamless transition between the living-dining space and the outdoors. The steel pivot doors provided the perfect solution to the client’s desire to achieve a distinct look, offering something different to standard bi-fold solutions. Furthermore, a hallway door allows more light to flow throughout the interior, allowing a sense of outward connectedness to radiate into the home.

“What made the project unique was the amount and use of pivot doors at a residential property, given their price point they are used more often in a commercial setting. Each used the premium FritsJurgens pivot mechanism and hardware and made for a stunning and practical feature,” says James Pridgeon, Founder of Steel Window Design. Using steel in Albert Park House showcases the versatility of the material. James explains, “Australian steel is an amazing product. It’s durable, and the 30mm steel profile we use has incredibly narrow [sight] lines. This is a game changer when it comes to the aesthetics of a space and means your windows and doors can be a feature rather than just a practical component of your build.”

The Melbourne-based team works with leading architects and builders across Australia. Steel Window Design crafts all products using Australian steel with sustainability at the forefront of its ethos. By keeping operations local – including suppliers and partners – the company supports the local economy and minimises its carbon footprint.

“We are passionate about supporting Australian manufacturing. And this means supporting local jobs. When our clients buy a window and door from us, they can come and see it being made in our factory. This gives architects and builders a level of comfort that buying frames made overseas doesn’t allow,” says James. Maintaining a local focus also ensures absolute control over the process, nurtures rich relationships and guarantees a carefully curated final design.

The brand delves into the global marketplace wherever necessary, sourcing premium hardware from around the world. For Albert Park House, Steel Window Design worked closely with Bellevue Architectural, the Australian distributors of FristJurgens, to supply the best pivot door hardware on the market. “Steel windows and doors are huge in the UK and Europe. So, for hardware that we can’t make or buy in Australia, we source from our partners in England, Switzerland and Italy. Because they’ve been making steel windows for centuries in some cases, they have beautiful products that complement our steel windows and doors,” explains James.

The beautiful designs showcased in the Melbourne home are the result of the Steel Window Design philosophy; the uniqueness of handcrafted products, the importance of personal relationships with clients and architects and an understanding of the artistic nature of steel. “Working with steel is a real art form. Our qualified team handcrafts each steel frame and this is something that appeals to builders, architects and interior designers as we can custom design for any space. It means that you’re not limited to standard sizes or a catalogue of designs or colours.”

Everything Steel Window Design produces is custom and one-of-a-kind. “Our relationship with a client, builder or architect doesn’t just end when their steel windows or doors are installed. We’re in it for the long run and we approach every project with passion and professionalism as we love what we do,” says James. The carefully curated product and level of service mean the only thing Steel Window Design is limited by is imagination.
