Sitting on a tree-lined street in Auburn, Melbourne, a once-ordinary 1990s home has undergone a remarkable metamorphosis. Fiona Lynch Office has breathed new life into Auburn Residence, creating a space where art and design intertwine.

Charged with addressing the original home that had angled rooms and cramped spaces, Fiona Lynch Office commenced by stripping the interior back to its bones, retaining only the existing timber floors. Movement through the home was significantly improved by removing an enclosed stair balustrade, opening up circulation and sightlines between the kitchen and living areas. Interconnection as a key theme was also explored through linking to the lush gardens, now visible from internal spaces. Further interaction is encouraged through new bi-fold doors that open from the kitchen to the outdoor terrace and swimming pool.

Custom rugs and carpets in saturated aubergine, sapphire and olive hues create soft landings throughout the space, adding warmth and comfort underfoot.

Employing a bold and evocative colour palette served to define different zones within the home. Custom rugs and carpets in saturated aubergine, sapphire and olive hues create soft landings throughout the space, adding warmth and comfort underfoot. In the kitchen, a verdant palette spanning basil, deep forest greens and gentle speckled seafoam further enhances connection, blurring boundaries between interior and exterior.

The residence presents a fascinating study in contrasts between its day and night spaces. Ground-floor living areas are characterised by energising vibrancy, melding coloured glass, steely shimmers and bold tonal saturations with inviting comfort. In contrast, upstairs private zones embrace a more soothing palette of deep greys and blues, creating a cocoon-like atmosphere conducive to rest and relaxation. This dichotomy is most evident in the primary suite, where deeply pigmented pewter walls and ceiling instantly hush the room, creating a sanctuary of calm.

The newly created interior is a celebration of form and texture that is both sophisticated and tactile.

The newly created interior is a celebration of form and texture that is both sophisticated and tactile. Sculptural lighting fixtures serve as artistic focal points throughout the space, their unique shapes casting intriguing shadows and creating visual interest. In the kitchen, Travertine Litzio and Verde Bardini stone create abstract forms across the island bench, splashback and overhead joinery. Planes of expressively veined stone add a natural, organic element to the design, while golden sheens and high-gloss lacquers introduce an element of opulence. These swathes of stone are softened by brown leather chairs, a solid timber dining table by local Australian maker Jon Goulder and the glass and brushed brass of the staircase.

Auburn Residence by Fiona Lynch Office is a masterclass in sensory design, seamlessly blending bold aesthetics with practical functionality, balancing vibrant energy with moments of quiet introspection. Through a careful orchestration of colour, texture and form, the home now meets the functional needs of its occupants and nourishes their spirits. It is a space that invites touch, contemplation and joy in equal measure.
