A Night of Jazz
Bankston and Design Nature Agency unite music, design and materiality at an intimate Redfern evening, with jazz, food, considered hardware and creative collaboration crafting a sensory experience.
On a recent winter’s night in Redfern, Sydney, Australian architectural hardware brand Bankston brought its philosophy of design into focus with A Night of Jazz, an intimate evening presented in partnership with Design Nature Agency (DNA). Rather than introducing a collection through a conventional launch, Bankston created an environment where its hardware could be encountered naturally, surrounded by music, food, conversation and good design.
The evening took place at Electric Sheep Music, a post-production audio studio designed by Olivia Bossy, whose tactile interior provided an atmospheric setting for the occasion. Inspired by Bankston’s belief that design is about considered detail, intersecting material, form and function, the brand’s designs were integrated throughout the space.
Doors were fitted with pieces from the Casts collection, created in collaboration with architecture practice Edition Office. Other hardware was placed for guests to handle and experience firsthand. Their weight, texture and precision became part of the evening’s broader sensory experience, demonstrating how seemingly small architectural details can contribute to an interior’s character.
The gathering reflects Bankston’s ongoing commitment to working alongside the design community. Founded in 2018 by Steve and Emily Bradley, the brand evolved from a family heritage hardware business, Traditional Brass Co., established in Adelaide in 1982. Today, Bankston collaborates with leading architects and designers – including YSG Studio, Civilian and Sans-Arc – to develop collections defined by a contemporary interpretation of material and form.
For A Night of Jazz, DNA founder Olivia Sholler brought together members of her network of designers and artists, with the Max Alduca Trio performing beside the warm glow of Olivia Bossy’s Big Ears lights. Together, the elements made an evening where Bankston’s hardware was showcased within a space that reinforces its belief that true design is ultimately felt through the details.
