Brahminy House by Harley Graham Architects
A beautifully considered addition to the Byron Bay beachfront, Brahminy House by Harley Graham Architects stands as a striking testament to contemporary coastal design.
Positioned in Wategos Beach, a picturesque setting known for its natural beauty, pristine sands and crystal clear waters, the home is constructed from concrete and adorned in dark timbers and warm renders, radiating a tranquil presence that complements the awe-inspiring views of the beach and the iconic nearby lighthouse.
Located within a dense coastal community near Australia’s easternmost point, Brahminy House is thoughtfully designed to not only capture the allure of its location but to actively engage and respond to its oceanfront setting. “The clients approached us with a vision for Brahminy House centred around the idea of a modern coastal retreat that seamlessly blends with its natural surroundings while providing a luxurious and tranquil living experience,” says Tyler Gwyther from Harley Graham Architects.
Initially driven by a vision to create a Hamptons-style home, a mutual decision was made between the architect and clients as the project unfolded: to pivot towards a design that responded more to the environment, embracing natural materials and a heightened connection to the surrounds. “The clients’ vision for the desired atmosphere was continuously taken into account,” says Gwyther. “Regular collaboration ensured that the design choices resonated with their expectations, creating a space that felt personal and also aligned with their lifestyle.”
The balance between aesthetics and the beachside mood was achieved by harmonising the structure with the natural surrounds. For instance, an array of lush plantings envelops the home, softening the distinction between built and natural elements. This affinity to nature was further enhanced through an open-plan layout and a harmonious integration of indoor and outdoor living spaces– as well as framed views of the breathtaking ocean and the rear coastal heathlands – a signature design style of Harley Graham Architects. “We drew upon our commitment to creating spaces that balance functionality with aesthetics,” says Gwyther. “One key aspect of our style is a dedication to integrating structures with their sites, and in the case of Brahminy House, this meant a meticulous consideration of the landscape.”
The primary goal was to not only create a retreat that resonated with the setting but to also imbue a warm, peaceful and timeless atmosphere through the careful orchestration of natural materials and functional design. A balance between function, aesthetics and mood was therefore carefully considered throughout the design process in order to create a cohesive living experience. This was “achieved through a holistic approach that considered the environment, client preferences and the seamless integration of architectural and natural elements,” says Gwyther. Concrete was chosen for both its modern aesthetic and ability to stand the test of time. Dark natural timbers and warm renders were also incorporated to soften the overall look of the home and imbue a sense of elegance in both private and public realms. In addition to the durable nature of these materials, the combined palette of the dwelling adopts the tonality of the environment, contributing to the welcoming atmosphere and complementing the surrounding landscape.

Inside, comfortable interior furnishings including plush sofas, natural textiles and curated decor elements contribute to a cosy and inviting scene. The timeless quality also ensures the interior spaces age gracefully, aligning with the enduring nature of the design. “A commitment to timeless elegance was essential,” says Gwyther. “The shift from the initially envisioned Hamptons style to a more environmentally responsive design did not compromise the pursuit of enduring beauty.” The plan also facilitates a seamless connection between indoor and outdoor spaces, which not only maximises the coastal experience but also allows natural light to flood the interiors that, in turn, fosters a sense of spaciousness for social gatherings.
As one journeys through to the rear of the home, a secluded retreat unfolds, complete with a pool and spa, offering a haven to rest and recharge. Outdoor spaces such as this have been thoughtfully designed to create a natural extension of the interior, inviting residents to immerse themselves in the oceanside ambience. Native greenery surrounding the home not only contributes to the aesthetic appeal but also fosters a sense of privacy and tranquillity. The strategic placement of these outdoor elements complements the overall design, creating an oasis where residents can unwind and reconnect with nature. This intentional blend of architecture and landscaping highlights the attention to detail that defines the dwelling, making it an exemplar of sophisticated living.
This creative approach not only enhances the design of the home but also underscores the architects’ commitment to craft and consideration for the clients’ vision. Whether it’s the considered alignment of materials contributing to its robust construction or the seamless integration of architectural elements reminiscent of its beachy context, Brahminy House exudes contemporary charisma, elevating its aesthetic allure and making it a valuable addition to the Byron Bay beachfront.
