Balancing the notion of floating with solidity, Bridgehampton Beach House expresses the relationship between the ocean and the coastline through a tactile and contrasting approach to material choice. Steven Harris Architects and Rees Roberts + Partners combine to craft a unique, organic form amid the coastal surrounds.

Set atop a sprawling and generous allotment, the oceanfront multi-level home contains several distinctly differing experiences under the one roof. As a place of escape and disconnection, the residence is immersed within surrounding sand dunes – ideal for both concealing neighbouring homes and directing views to the ocean. The overall form is broken down into parts, with the main home as the anchoring point and a lighter, elevated built form representing the fluidity of water. The structure’s improved connection to the integrated inground pool on the property reinterprets the past traditional pool house and pergola to allow the feature to sit more organically on site. Steven Harris Architects and Rees Roberts + Partners integrate a holistic approach to both the overall architecture and interior spaces to ensure the overall design principles carry effortlessly throughout.

As the home is a celebration of the natural elements, it honours a sense of place through integrating key connections between the built and natural environments. The house is a facilitator of activity, allowing for moments of both socialisation and intimate retreat. Setting the scene from the entry is a mural piece that integrates itself into the architecture, expressively inviting guests inward and initiating the journey through the rest of the extensive and treasured collection of artworks. This initial commissioned piece communicates the story of an activated series of spaces that act as a canvas for both life and art.

Maintaining views out to the immediate landscape and ocean beyond is a consistent theme across both internal and external spaces. Whilst the close proximity to the sea provides a calming influence, the harsh winds and corrosive conditions also needed to be considered. The robustness of the materiality, marine grade elements and integration of protective outdoor spaces all ensure the home is reactive and suited to its climatic conditions.

A haven amid an undulating terrain, Bridgehampton Beach House aims to be both responsive and enduring in its engagement with the landscape. Steven Harris Architects and Rees Roberts + Partners inject constant reminders of the natural surrounds and artful contemplation into the fabric of the building, resulting in a distinct and welcoming home.
