Inspired by the work of Donald Judd, Faulkner Architects and NICOLEHOLLIS craft CAMPout, a secluded retreat designed to harmonise with the surrounding woodland environment. The architect and designer establish a seamless connection between the interior and exterior by utilising a palette that exudes a warm and welcoming ambiance, inviting individuals to nestle in and experience a harmony between spaces.

“Hidden deep within the woods of Truckee, California, CAMPout stands strong among the pines,” says Nicole Hollis of NICOLEHOLLIS. “We designed a home with natural materials that were beautiful and bold,” she adds, “with a unique floor plan consisting of long hallways and large rooms surrounding the home’s focal point: a central courtyard.” Along with Faulkner Architects, NICOLEHOLLIS extends the architectural themes seamlessly into the interior design. The approach is one that allows for the traditional yet refined form to sit amid such a densely wooded area. Despite the towering scale of the surrounding trees, the distinctive lines of the structure guarantee that the residence establishes its own sense of place, making it a destination worthy of exploration.

Characterised by a sequence of angular lines shaping the roof’s overall silhouette, the residence modestly occupies its site. Inside, a thoughtfully designed spatial plan reveals clear and openable elements connecting the interior with the surrounding landscape. Extensive glazing not only strengthens visual ties but also serves as a constant reminder of the home’s secluded location. Balancing key moments of retreat and entertainment, the spaces exhibit a flexible design. The intentionally dark and distinct palette also fosters a sense of immersion, ensuring the visibility of the lush, living elements.

Drama unfolds both upon arrival and within the residence. Achieved through contrast and framed views capturing glimpses of the surroundings, every element within the dwelling coexists in harmony with one another. The authenticity in material choices and finishes serves as a constant reminder of the craftsmanship that features throughout the spaces. “The home perfectly reflects the adventurous, close-knit family who visits this mountain escape as frequently as they can,” says Nicole.

CAMPout leaves a minimal footprint on its surroundings but leaves a lasting impression on its visitors. Combining a robust design with meticulously executed detailing, Faulkner Architects and NICOLEHOLLIS create a charming abode that effortlessly complements the location.
