Canyon Hideaway by Balton Design
Canyon Hideaway by Balton Design reimagines a 1938 Hollywood Hills estate, emphasising its lush landscape and canyon views. The result is a tranquil retreat that balances sophistication and comfort.
Balton Design’s renovation removed the heavy industrial-meets-glam elements from the previous update, introducing a palette of earthy materials that echo the property’s natural surroundings. Owned by Alex Cooper, the host of the popular podcast ‘Call Her Daddy,’ this home serves as both a serene escape and a testament to thoughtful design. Plaster, limestone, marble and brick form the foundation of this timeless aesthetic, creating a harmonious connection between the interior and the expansive lot.
Enhancing the visual connection between the home and its extraordinary setting was a key focus. New windows and doors were strategically added, allowing for panoramic views of the canyon and abundant natural light. This thoughtful design choice established a seamless flow between indoor and outdoor spaces, maximising the home’s picturesque environment.
The design process for Canyon Hideaway was marked by a collaborative relationship between Balton Design and Cooper, characterised by a shared vision and mutual trust. This synergy resulted in a smooth six-month renovation, ultimately culminating in a home that reflects Cooper’s desire for warmth, cosiness and an inviting atmosphere.

The interior spaces feature highly textured neutrals that provide a tactile richness. Linen, alpaca, wool, and shearling fabrics contribute to the home’s sophisticated charm, while vintage carpets add character. Handmade ceramics and aged oak further enhance the ambience, creating a space that feels both elevated and effortless.
Adding to the sense of timelessness, antique pieces are thoughtfully integrated throughout the home. An antique French console table graces the entry, paired with pendant lights by Rose Uniacke. In the living room, custom sofas covered in de Le Cuona linen promise ultimate comfort, complemented by ottomans upholstered in Rogers and Goffigon fabric.
Balton Design expertly curated a blend of vintage and contemporary elements, ensuring each room exudes understated luxury. The kitchen features a Wolf range and Eco Outdoor limestone floors, while the dining nook is highlighted by a custom banquette dressed in de Le Cuona linen and RH dining chairs. This careful selection of materials and furnishings results in a home that is both timeless and current.
One of the defining features of the project is the effortless integration of indoor and outdoor living. By blurring these boundaries, the design allows the natural beauty of the Hollywood Hills to become an integral part of the home’s identity. A custom bar in Gris De Savoie marble offers a unique space for hosting, reminiscent of a cosy date night. Canyon Hideaway exemplifies Balton Design’s ability to balance elegance and comfort, offering a serene escape in the heart of the Hollywood Hills.
