Captain Balfour by Studio Robert McKinley is a newly renovated bungalow in the coveted coastal hamlet of Montauk. Perched on a hill with sweeping views of the ocean and direct beach access, this waterfront home – which is as laid-back as it is luxurious – is a fitting reflection of the locale within which it exists.

As a native New Yorker and long-term visitor to Montauk, Robert McKinley is not only familiar with Long Island’s architectural vernacular and interiors, but also with its effortless yet distinctly elevated surf culture. Each of his projects in the area neatly encapsulates this essence and Captain Balfour – the latest in his studio’s growing collection of bungalows – is grounded in a deep connection to landscape. As Robert shares, “each of our bungalows has its own spirit. [Captain Balfour] connects to the bay, the beach and the rugged coast it’s on.” He adds, “the location of the site is truly an oasis, tucked out of view of any other houses or structures; the vista is unobstructed and the sunsets are front and centre.”

Behind the silvered cedar and mahogany-clad exterior – an element “inspired by the salty and weathered cedar-clad homes of the north-east” – is a characterful interiority. Though layered, it is not loud; rather, it hums with a sense of stillness and repose. The palette of timber, ceramic and textiles is earthy and warm, and large windows frame views of the water, guiding the internal experience outwards. In the kitchen, rough sawn oak cabinetry and travertine are a study of neutrality, and white timber battens clad the ceiling, adding texture and visual interest. “We tried to blur the lines between the traditional and the modern, mixing new and vintage, and playing with texture and finishes that feel appropriate and connected to Montauk,” Robert reflects, adding that “it is always important to make sure we are inspired by the colours, materials and vibe of the place and its spirit.”

Colour comes into play in the bathrooms with custom tiles in seaweed greens by trusted collaborators Heath Ceramics, and elsewhere, sandy hues and blue-green tones nod to the ocean mere steps away. This tranquil backdrop is enlivened by Studio Robert McKinley’s thoughtful curation of furniture, objects and artwork. Akari Light Sculptures, vintage teak credenzas, the studio’s own contemporary creations, 1970s-era coat racks and works from an exciting roster of artists create a true sense of place. Interestingly, many of these pieces are “shoppable”, giving visitors and guests alike the opportunity to enjoy a slice of the bungalow back home.

Captain Balfour encapsulates a variety of considered influences with beachy elements and notes of both Scandinavian and Japanese design ideals. Tempered just so, the result is a visual rhythm that is both soothing and surprising, and a beautiful backdrop to a weekend by the sea.
