With a focus on the internal experience, Carpenters Square House takes its name from the formation the form and new inner courtyard take on site. Architects EAT draws from the existing and crafted nature of the original home to propose an openly connected series of volumes that enhance the everyday.

Extending the relevance of the existing Edwardian-era home, Carpenters Square House is conceived as an evolution of the original structure. Whilst maintaining the existing formality of the home, the addition creates a series of free-flowing areas that effortlessly merge and open generously to the newly conceived landscape. With a focus on the interior experience, a cohesive relationship between the existing and additional forms becomes one of cohesion. Architects EAT carry the principles of the original form into the design approach of the new, expanding the home’s overall footprint with easy fluidity.

Extending the relevance of the existing Edwardian-era home, Carpenters Square House is conceived as an evolution of the original structure.

In approaching a seamless connection between the home’s volumes, a careful balance is created through materiality and plan. The narrative of the residence’s prior formality is continued in the newly designed form with the inclusion of open and visually connected shapes. The extension takes on an L-shaped form, enclosing the central landscape area and creating a square accessible from multiple internal areas.

The efforts in restoring the original home and adding key additional volumes to the rear were born from a desire to continue the legacy and narrative of the home. By adding open living areas that reflect a contemporary occupation, the more formally separated areas within the pre-existing home play a role in becoming the passive retreat spaces. Continuing a focus on a crafted and artisanal approach, the expressive brickwork, joinery and finishes are sharply executed, ensuring a purposeful cohesion across the project.

Through a considered approach, Carpenters Square House openly embraces its natural elements. Respecting what stood before, Architects EAT honours the original home and integrates similar core values into the new through materiality, plan and intent.
