Set within the layered topography of Mosman on Sydney’s North Shore, Clifton House is the work of esteemed design and building practice Cadence & Co. Rather than erasing what came before, the design listens to it: Cadence & Co’s reimagination creates dialogue between past and present, honouring the home’s original character while allowing contemporary interventions to emerge.

Cadence & Co’s response focused on clarifying space and enhancing flow across the home’s three levels.

After living in the home for many years, the clients engaged Cadence & Co to rethink the spaces for their evolving family and, ultimately, for multi-generational living. The brief was to retain the residence’s classic architectural elements while resolving the limitations of its original layout. Further to this, the clients wanted a series of interconnected multifunctional spaces to support communal living, private retreat and entertaining.

The response focused on clarifying space and enhancing flow across the home’s three levels. Light, outlook and patterns of everyday use informed the design approach. Cadence & Co reworked the internal structure to create a clearer sequence of arrival, movement and hierarchy throughout the residence. Previously constrained entry conditions were opened up, with raised ceilings and reconfigured circulation establishing a more generous and legible threshold that sets the tone for the zones beyond.

The living spaces are distributed across the three levels to encourage connection while providing opportunities for retreat. Each zone is calibrated to its function, with openings positioned to frame views and draw natural light deep into the interior. These openings strengthen the relationship between the inside and outside, creating an indoor-outdoor thread that supports everyday living and entertaining. Spaces can expand or contract in response to different modes of occupation, accommodating intimate family moments as comfortably as larger social gatherings.

Throughout the home, Cadence & Co has given attention to the way light settles across surfaces and how spaces alternately open and retreat. The architecture balances clarity with ease, creating interiors that feel refined without rigidity, warm without excess. Grounded in their context yet designed for the future, the spaces are calm, assured and carry a subtle imprint of those who inhabit them.

A richness in the material palette nods to this sense of permanence and comfort.

A richness in the material palette nods to this sense of permanence and comfort. Stone connects with timber, plaster diffuses light with softness, and brass introduces warmth and precision. A subtle palette of green runs through the kitchen, drawing the eye outwards to the terrace and landscape. The same tones continue into the powder room, deepening in hue and anchored by a veined marble splashback, forest-inspired wallpaper and green-and-white floor tiles. This use of colour as a connective thread extends throughout; elsewhere, warm mustard and brown tones bring their own sense of depth and cohesion.

With Clifton House, Cadence & Co balances preservation and progression, retaining the character of the original home while adapting it to support contemporary living. A collective of architects, interior designers, craftspeople and builders, the Cadence & Co team is committed to delivering exceptional design, craftsmanship and service.
