In Paddington, an eastern suburb of Sydney, Equanimity is transformed into a cohesive and light-filled family home, as MCK Architects and Atelier Alwill skilfully balance traditional elements with a modern, open design. Both architect and designer restore and elevate the existing features, infusing a sense of refinement and tranquillity.

Upon entering this charming terrace home, a feeling of being transported prevails. Leaving behind the bustling streets of Paddington, the reworked and expanded residence exudes warmth and brightness. The incorporation of skylights and extensive glazing aims to eliminate darkness, and despite the linear layout, strategic interventions by MCK Architects and Atelier Alwill create an open and flowing ambiance. Throughout the design process, retaining nods to the Victorian era’s character-rich detailing was important, with new additions complementing the historical context rather than overshadowing it.

Leaving behind the bustling streets of Paddington, the reworked and expanded residence exudes warmth and brightness.

Originally designed for working families, the emphasis, at the time, was on increasing housing density rather than prioritising sustainability aspects such as natural light and ventilation. By centralising the staircase and re-evaluating the need for an internal void, access between the floors was greatly improved. The reconfigured planning across each level optimised available space to align with the owners’ desired lifestyle. Consistently muted finishes also create a shared sense of calm and neutral warmth through the spaces.

The two brightest areas, visible upon entry, serve as the main living spaces. The ground-floor front rooms are reconfigured into an extended main bedroom suite, addressing the need for self-contained inter-generational living with street access. At the rear, the main living space replaces the lean-to structure and opens up to the backyard. Strip skylights along the newly expanded living zone, encompassing the kitchen, dining and living areas, minimise the need for additional lighting. Integrated joinery lining the walls seamlessly caters to the owners’ amenity and storage needs, ensuring each room feels as spacious as possible.

The pursuit of harmony guided the design philosophy for Equanimity. MCK Architects and Atelier Alwill soften the existing elements through a contemporary perspective, preserving the delicate elements while crafting a distinctly sleek home.
