TSAR Carpets presents Forma, the latest collection of original, hand-tufted rug designs that speak to vivid colourways and innovative textures. Combining daring design with fine art, the new collection features 25 vibrant and animated patterns that explore themes of nature, energy and optimism.

Designed during the COVID-19 lockdowns, Forma by TSAR Carpets is a reflective yet inquisitive exploration. Setting the tone for the crafted collection is the voyage of escapism; imbued with natural textures and organic motifs, Forma was inspired by the meditative neighbourhood walks by the company’s then isolated in-house design team. “The goal was to create designs that exemplify and embody the dawn of a new beginning,” explains Teresa Ceberek, TSAR Carpets Design Manager. “The word ‘forma’ is a playful nod to the imaginative and uplifting shapes in each of the rug’s patterns, as well as the abstract silhouettes of the rugs themselves.”

Taking this moment to experiment with form, the collection represents a refreshing chapter for the company, as they trialled new fading techniques to achieve the desired gradient colourways and vignettes. “Due to the success and popularity of our previous textural collections, including Saltwater and Lagoon, the team experimented with new construction and fade techniques to produce never before seen textures, patterns and fibre combinations that push the limits of virtuosic hand-tufted rug manufacturing,” Teresa explains. Forma is also the first time TSAR implemented ribbon yarn as a material when crafting sculptural rug dimensions.

Dazzling colours, extravagant and creative patterns, meticulous texture combinations and mesmerising gradient transitions dominate Forma in an energetic embodiment. “Mixing natural references and surreal compositions is a direct reflection of our collective headspace at the time of the collection’s conception,” Teresa says. The collection takes its inspiration from nature, from sunsets to the moon, from rockpools to the ocean, from concrete to tree bark, from a beehive to moss. Presented in six ‘Acts’, Forma is envisioned as a reimaging of the natural elements: the push, pull and fluidity of nature; the structured and bold injection of colour; unexpected vibrancy; tactile textures and organic expression; dynamic and playful patterns; and the desire to nurture a connection to the natural environment.

By owning and ultimately controlling the entire manufacturing process, TSAR Carpets was able to ensure that each design was executed with the utmost quality. Hand-tufted using 100% New Zealand wool, undyed wool, Tencel, Lurex and ribbon yarn, each piece reflects considered layering techniques, scale, texture and geometrics.
