Gamma Gamma House is the renovation and expansion of a heritage house using existing building materials and structures. Lawless & Meyerson focuses on creating an open and connected home that integrates natural and textural materials in a tonal palette that is consistent throughout.

Utilising the existing structural bones already in place since the 1990s, a new chapter for Gamma Gamma House is shaped that captures a sense of place and the inhabitants. Instead of producing copious amounts of waste with the matched energy required for disposal, the aim was to use as much as possible that was already on site. Redefining the home with a considered level of intervention, Lawless & Meyerson focuses on infusing warmth while still retaining connections to the coastal surrounds.

Set within Tamarama, a lightness to all elements grounds the home through beachy tones reminiscent of its coastal milieu. However, instead of pushing this aesthetic too far, a balance of warm and natural materials adds depth and interest. In wanting to craft a legacy, each selection needed to have an enduring quality and not be reflective of any particular time or style. Together with curated settings of furniture, lighting, artwork and objects, a neutral base becomes the ideal backdrop for family life.

Ensuring the home had a transportive effect underpinned many of the design decisions. Looking to the nearby sandstone cliff faces for inspiration, texture is embedded in a subtle way and connects the home to the natural and unchanging environment. Large openings and glazed panels also ensure the surroundings feel like a natural extension of the interior, bringing in natural light and framing views out. In redesigning and replanning the home holistically, a more considered overlay of function is applied to zones.

Led by an intentional restraint, Gamma Gamma House brings an elegance to the typified interpretation of coastal, casual calm. Lawless & Meyerson proposes an approach fit for contemporary living and the chapters to come.
