Designed as a primary residence, Gawler Crescent offers varied living environments for long-term comfort. From the private courtyard to the rooftop terrace, Ben Walker Architects has created multiple ways for the occupants to connect with the outdoors and the unique Canberra vistas.

Set along a leafy road near the Parliamentary Triangle, Gawler Crescent opens to expansive views. From the upper floor, the distant Black Mountain and Brindabella Range come into sight, while the rooftop offers a striking 360-degree view of the city centre. Crafted from concrete, stone and rendered brick, the architecture reflects the materiality of older buildings in the area, its levels defined by horizontal concrete parapet beams. To soften the home’s perpendicular angles, curves appear in soffits, beams and terrace detailing. A series of bronze battened screens on the upper floor facade further animate the building, providing shade and privacy while the shifting tones trace the sun’s movement throughout the day.

Throughout the residence, openness and enclosure is thoughtfully balanced.

On the ground floor, the kitchen, dining area, guest suite and two living spaces open to the courtyard, where northern light floods the interiors. Arranged in an L-shape, these zones encourage togetherness while maintaining a connection to the outdoors. Throughout the residence, openness and enclosure is thoughtfully balanced; in the formal living area, a cantilevered balcony is oriented towards the street, while in the main bedroom, a Juliet balcony nestles against the fronds of a palm tree. At the rear, curved stone walls gently frame a small outdoor terrace.

Each space in Gawler Crescent celebrates warm, tonal materials, with oak flooring and timber veneer joinery defining the lower level. Limestone benches complemented by matching tiles and wall linings extend the home’s textural profile. Natural light enters through large windows and skylights, including a circular opening above the spiral staircase. To maximise energy efficiency, the glazing is double layered within thermally broken frames, while insulated walls and floors reduce the need for mechanical heating during winter.

Gawler Crescent embodies an expressive approach to contemporary residential design.
