Inspired by faraway lands and spiritual stories, Tappeti Fine Handcrafted Rugs + Carpets and YSG unveil Real Majik – an inaugural collaboration of hand-knotted and hand-tufted rugs. With ingenuity and passion, YSG and Tappeti have interpreted the colourful narratives of Egypt’s landscape and pharaonic past, grounding a belief in the power of magic.

Over several years, Tappeti and Yasmine Ghoniem, Founder and Director of interior design practice YSG, have built a symbiotic relationship, working together in the creation of custom rugs and carpets for a handful of the studio’s clients. Now, in 2023, the two have again collaborated to offer an inspired 12-piece rug line that incorporates vibrant pigments and features motifs, icons, symbols and abstract landscapes that evoke Egyptian history.

Containing fibres such as art silk, hemp, Tibetan highland wool and nettle, the hand-knotted rugs reveal a delicate pattern detailing, while the hand-tufted pieces expose a lustrous choice of textures such as New Zealand wool and artsilk with a mix of loop and cut piles.

Informed by Yasmine’s Egyptian heritage and belief in the power of magic, the Real Majik collection offers colourways that that reference the constellation of Seba, with stars sparkling on a blue sky, sarcophagi and a solitary cat on guard. Once combined, the assembly of rugs together tell stories of the ancient deities of Egypt, adding an additional layer of rarity and intrigue to a space. Yet simultaneously, with each piece, Real Majik presents a distinctive contemporary language, with punchy tonal palettes, stripes, colour-blocking and watercolour-like forms. Additionally, the rugs are varying in shapes, sizes and design – from rectangular to organic – with features including tassels, fringes, pompoms and cut-out checkered borders that acknowledge the orderly pattern of hieroglyphics.

Moreover, colours ranging from amethyst, garnet and toffee are created through a traditional batch-dyeing that minimises chemical wastage and provide scope for collaboration, with each rug in the collection able to be customised to order.

Offering a unique layer of colour and texture to enliven interiors, Tappeti and Yasmine have created a compelling collection of rugs that appear as a piece of art within the home.
