Inkerman & Nelson is a collaboration between Australia’s most progressive experts in urban living, one of Melbourne’s most innovative design studios and a garden architecture firm with a rare insight into how space and facility must work together. Developed by ICON Developments, designed by MAArchitects and featuring landscaping by Eckersley Garden Architecture, Inkerman & Nelson is a series of design-led homes that reaffirms ICON’s tradition of creating highly considered spaces.
ICON brings over twenty years of experience to the project, along the way forging a reputation for working with communities and industry-leading experts to craft and deliver smart, meticulously designed spaces. The Inkerman & Nelson project exemplifies ICON’s ethos by ensuring that the purposefully designed village will contribute positively to the fabric of its locale.
A series of two and three-storey townhomes on the corner of Inkerman and Nelson streets in the Melbourne suburb of Balaclava, the project has been conceived on the core principles of practical living. Each home is defined by flexibility, featuring a spacious floorplan, secure access and an optimised northern orientation. Designed by MAArchitects to wear in beautifully, the residences offer a variety of floorplans with options for living areas on either the ground or second floor, large rear gardens and a rooftop terrace for select homes.

Architecturally striking, Inkerman & Nelson is designed as six standalone yet interwoven buildings, with each distinct façade drawing on its unique surrounds for inspiration. All featuring an abundance of natural light, the townhomes give residents the option for two, three or four bedrooms, and feature a laundry, secure carparks, whole-floor living zones with a dual aspect and leafy views of Balaclava’s continually evolving streetscape.

Considered interiors continue ICON’s tradition of creating highly intuitive homes for growing, modern families. With this in mind, each internal space is intentionally adaptable, without compromising on quality or style – an approach that was continued through the landscaping of the project. Viewing the garden as an extension of the home, Eckersley Garden Architecture was engaged by ICON to bring subtle layers to the project by designing a natural landscape that enables long periods of relaxation in the outdoors and, ultimately, draws the community towards the natural hub of Inkerman & Nelson.
Deeply engaged in the project, all three collaborators thrived when presented with the challenge of creating a series of design-centric homes with the intuitive flexibility to respond to the needs of the modern family dynamic. Through Inkerman & Nelson, ICON, MAArchitects and Eckersley Garden Architecture have created a series of design-led homes that transcend the perimeters of their four walls, uniting residents within a purposefully designed new village, and fostering an appreciation for intentional modern living.
