Sophistication and a touch of swagger emanates from the design of this social area for an Auckland-based commercial property company. Created by James McNab Design, the space features a range of textural elements and sculptural details, adding depth and richness to a predominantly dark colour palette.

Allusions to a certain popular novel and its corresponding movie adaptation aside, the design for this kitchen, bar and social space by James McNab Design makes effective use of a variety of shades within a dark palette. An array of textures brings elegance and depth to the design, with yakisugi timber panelling on the bar front giving a sense of age and permanence, alongside raw brass cabinet handles on the back wall and white-veined dark grey travertine benchtops. Soundproofing above the bar doubles as a sleek sculptural feature for the space.

Fluted stained cedar screens lend some separation between the social zone and adjoining office spaces, while floor-to-ceiling darkly grained timber cabinetry gives a sense of cohesiveness throughout the spaces as well as providing for all-important storage.

A high level of sound insulation allows for private conversations to be held in the adjacent cubicles yet remains open to allow for collaboration and connection between the rooms.

James McNab Design created some bespoke pieces for this fit out, including a substantial executive desk made from a solid slab of timber, which rests on an impressive travertine plinth. A faceted reception desk is reminiscent of a jewellery box, accented with brass elements and seated with a timber-clad bench adjoined with a built-in planter box. Furniture by other designers also features, such as local Tim Webber’s comfortably enveloping U-Turn Club Chair and the minimalist TOOU Cadrea bar stool sourced from Bauhaus.
