JD House by Architects Ink
Given a new lightness, JD House by Architects Ink is a historic home reinvigorated with a modernist and explorative spirit.
Tucked away from the streetscape, JD House is expanded from a 1890s stone villa into a more open and engaging contemporary home. Utilising the expanse of the existing site, the proposal unfolds as an interplay of open spaces and directed sightlines. With the preservation of the original villa key to the renovation, the new elements sit separately and take on a contemporary interpretation of a crafted and considered series of spaces. Openings are placed to best capture heat and solar gains while preserving privacy. Architects Ink offered an architectural balance to the existing structure, carving out a dedicated communal living zone that engages the landscape and natural elements more meaningfully.
Stretching deep into the site, the new works encompass an additional volume, garage and carport. Clad in western red cedar, this volume features a textural, natural finish on the exterior. Inside, the variation in ceiling heights and room sizes helps to define certain zones and demark the plan in a more organic way. With the primary living area now sitting more central to the footprint, activity is drawn inward, encouraging togetherness.
While the carport discreetly occupies the side boundary, the garage presents more as a garden room than something utilitarian and sensitively bridges old and new. Integrating a modern liveability was just as important as retaining heritage details. The newly introduced zones pay homage to the surroundings and capture an intentional lightness to contrast the solidity of the existing areas.
JD House is a well-balanced combination of heritage and modern elements. Architects Ink has respectfully rejuvenated the original home for contemporary living without taking away from its charm or character.
