Extending to the rear of an existing Californian-inspired bungalow home, Kent sees the expansion of a planned series of spaces to appropriately optimise outward connections. Megowan Architectural focuses on creating clear and openly connected living zones that spill out into the landscape, adding increased amenity and enhancing everyday living in the process.

Situated among residences of a similar scale within Melbourne’s inner east, Kent’s presence as a heritage home forms an integral part of Kew’s story and the formation of the suburb. Wanting to tuck the new addition from view, the architect expanded the floor plan to draw the pivotal functions of daily life in deeper and include extra retreat spaces within an additional upper level. Whilst the original façade and character are maintained, new elements are situated behind the existing silhouette and carefully come together as a reflection of contemporary living. An open plan arrangement is proposed to respond to the need for a larger and more connected living zone.

Inspired by the original brick and weatherboard materials on the front of the heritage bungalow, the new addition is clad in a similar light-coloured brick. Overlaying a sense of order and rhythm, the bricks frame views and openings out towards the landscaped space at the rear. As an extension of the newly formed combined living, dining and kitchen spaces, the outdoor entertaining area brings a more deliberate connection between the built and the natural, with fully operable doors that can be pulled back to soften the threshold.

Through a similar geometric style, the upper level takes shape within a contained and crisp form warmed by timber battens. Internally, a warm palette adds a lightness and brings textural depth through the combination of various gum veneer finishes. Contrasted by the polished concrete flooring, the crafted joinery sustains the connection to the handmade detailing of the original home yet is conceived through a more contemporary lens. Forming the foundation for the coming chapters, a robust and refined approach pulls the new elements together, evolving the original bungalow.

By utilising framing and creating a sustained lightness, Kent is transformed into a more modern home with expanded useability. Megowan Architectural ensures that a streamlined approach connects the old with the new and creates an ease of flow out into the garden and nature.
