Nestled discreetly in the streets of Paddington, Kidman Lane complements its surroundings while presenting a unique silhouette that hints at a more unconventional vision. Plus Minus Design turns a challenging brief into a playful and innovative interpretation of efficient living in inner Sydney.

What might have seemed like a constrained development opportunity has been expertly optimised in Kidman Lane. Plus Minus Design’s approach focuses on containment while ensuring the design sensitively integrates with the existing build. The owners prioritised functionality, off-street parking and a private outdoor garden space to enhance their living experience. The designer also recognised the importance of the established streetscape and charm, ensuring that the new structure aligns with its context. Drawing inspiration from the existing architecture has resulted in a contemporary home that has its own distinct presence and character.

The sawtooth roof of Kidman Lane nods to the nearby warehouse while maintaining a distinctly residential feel. The initial goal was to maximise every square metre for the owners, creating a home that feels both open and connected. The design aims for a timeless quality that resonates with modern living, ensuring a seamless flow between indoor and outdoor spaces. Clear access between the landscaped areas and the interiors allows the dwelling to adapt to changing weather and seasonal conditions. With three bedrooms, two bathrooms and an open living zone, the layout is deliberately linear and simplified, enhancing both functionality and comfort.

Flexibility is a central theme in Kidman Lane, allowing spaces to adapt for various uses and the rooms to serve multiple purposes. The main floor acts as the heart of daily life, opening generously to the courtyard. In contrast, the upper level offers a more serene retreat, elevated for privacy. Each of the four upper rooms has its own unique character and is filled with natural light. A muted base palette runs throughout the home, accented by pops of colour in select areas to add a touch of playfulness.

The harmonious design of the home is clear in its thoughtful execution. Plus Minus Design blends colour, crisp lines and simplicity to create a calm and restorative environment. This allows the owners to personalise the space over time, making it truly their own.
