Lakeshore Courtyard Residence by Smpl Design Studio
On a tree-lined stretch in Oakville, Ontario, Smpl Design Studio has orchestrated a delicate dance between past and present. The renovation of Lakeshore Courtyard Residence from its 1950s origins resulted in a home that honours its mid-century roots while embracing modern living.
Seeking a home that could function as both a primary residence and a weekend retreat, the clients had a strong desire to maintain the feel of the existing building while completely updating the home’s functionality. Spatial planning was driven by a desire for connection, both to landscape spaces and between internal zones. Floor-to-ceiling windows blur boundaries between inside and out, flooding the living areas with natural light and offering framed views of mature trees that punctuate the site. This transparency also allows for a unique architectural experience, where occupants can appreciate exterior elements from within, creating a strong dialogue between internal and external spaces.
The dual-purpose brief also informed the inclusion of amenities such as a basement theatre, an updated indoor pool and an indoor basketball court, with the latter cleverly integrated into an extended garage space. Perhaps the most striking architectural gesture is the primary bedroom wing and its connecting breezeway. Built on structural helical piles, this addition demonstrates a profound respect for the existing landscape. By minimising impact on the root systems of the 70-year-old trees, the resultant structure appears to float amid the foliage, offering a treehouse-like experience for the occupants. While little of the original residence was able to be salvaged, the design approach and atmosphere of the home is one of deep respect for what stood before.
The approach to materiality is both pragmatic and poetic. Salvaged red brick from the original structure serves as the conceptual cornerstone, informing both the exterior presence and interior palette. This reclaimed material is complemented by cedar soffits and accent fascia details, creating a rich tapestry of textures that extends from the outside to in. Internally, the material palette is softened by the introduction of subdued wood grain joinery, which provides a counterpoint to the robust brick and dark window frames. This consistent application of materials throughout the home creates a sense of cohesion and flow, guiding occupants through the various spaces.

This sensitive approach to site integration and referencing built heritage is emblematic of the project as a whole. Smpl Design Studio has crafted a home that is at once bold in its architectural expression and deeply rooted in its context. The Lakeshore Road Residence intangibly blends functionality with aesthetic appeal; it is both innovative and respectful of its surroundings.
