Engaged with the surrounds, Lynch Residence features a lively palette of contrasting, natural materials and generous spaces within. Auhaus Architecture and Ewert Leaf propose a home intended to evolve over time with the family, aligning with their ever-changing needs.

Located in Brighton, just south of Melbourne, Lynch Residence is in close proximity to the coast. Inspired by the surrounds and the sense of openness felt by living near the ocean, both architect and designer incorporate a similar principle into the home in response. By creating a form that reflects the owners’ personalities, Auhaus Architecture and Ewert Leaf ensures the dwelling leaves its own unique imprint on the site as well as the existing streetscape. The abode’s façade is clad in bold red ochre battens, and the entry is clearly marked by the exaggerated double-height opening to the left, defining the threshold between inside and out in a restrained yet intriguing way. In establishing the tone and material palette, the initial interaction with the building creates a sense of curiosity as to what lies within.

It is through subtle, unique alterations throughout that the abode is imbued with its own identity. Functional and bespoke, the residence features a midcentury palette that evokes an exploratory spirit. By choosing to celebrate rather than conceal the daily rituals within, the common areas for gathering and socialising are defined in their own respective ways. Thresholds between inside and out have also been dissolved to allow for a seamless transition between indoor-outdoor spaces and establish a connection with the landscape.

The heart of the home, the kitchen, has a moody atmosphere to it and sees darker finishes combined with expressive grey stone contrast with the deep green of the cabinetry, softening the space as a result. A nod to nature, the green – although dark – breaks up an otherwise monochromatic base. The use of light-washed timber and accompanying furniture adds texture and elevates the natural elements of the residence, warming and grounding it. Furthermore, the flexible features within can easily shift as needed to ensure each realm can be reconfigured over time.

By combining linear elements with more sweeping gestures, Auhaus Architecture and Ewert Leaf ensure the principles underpinning Lynch Residence instil a sense of balance. Both architect and designer craft a home that is welcoming and suitable for contemporary liveability – a dwelling that the occupants can customise as life progresses.
