In the short time since its December 2022 launch, Double has blazed a trail of manufacturing innovation spearheaded by its patented machine-washable rugs. The company has proven to be equally dynamic in its approach to aesthetics, with the new Midcentury Chapter 2 Collection referencing a golden era in design.

Double embodies an ethos of ‘no worries’ living, capable of withstanding spills and stains caused by parties, pets and life’s other messy moments. Underpinning this is the rug’s two-part construction: the base layer is a 100 per cent sustainably sourced mat that is fabricated from thermoplastic rubber and recycled polyester. It grips the floor securely, protecting against slippage and preventing movement and wrinkling. Sitting atop is the surface layer, securely held in place but easily detached for laundering. The 100 per cent recycled polyester yarn used to craft this wear layer is pleasing to the touch while being incredibly durable and is woven to withstand machine washing and low-heat tumble-drying for the duration of the product’s life.

The new Midcentury Chapter 2 Collection injects a design vocabulary characterised by the tropes of that era, such as simple geometric motifs and a strong contrasting palette. Stylist Gemma Keil, a midcentury design enthusiast who collaborated with Double on showcasing the collection, emphasises its tonal qualities. “The colour palette of the Midcentury Chapter 2 Collection is a fusion of warm earth tones, soft pastels, bold accents, retro influence and neutral backgrounds,” Gemma notes. “The bold accents like the cobalt blue amongst the more subtle tones adds energy and contrast to enliven a space.”

Spanning 11 new designs, the collection also celebrates tactility underfoot with textures that range from the plush high pile of Double’s signature cotton feel to the more robustly textured dimension of its new jute fabrication. Gemma’s pick of the collection is the Resonant style, a contemporary update of a classic Berber style that positions a diamond-shaped motif in a subtle taupe and bone colour pairing. “I don’t like a home to look too ‘themed’, and the pattern on this rug provides a subtle retro influence while retaining a contemporary feel,” she says. “For me, the attraction to modernist architecture is that it draws on the inside-outside feeling. There’s an expanse of glass to the garden, together with sandstone and wood, which provides a calming space to connect with nature. In my styling I try not to compete with the timber and sandstone by using a neutral palette. This allows the architecture to be the hero with a few accent pieces of furniture.”

Complementing this contemporary reprisal of a classic style is the machine-washable capabilities inherent in all rugs in the Double range. “As a mother to five-year-old twins, this reduces my stress levels greatly,” Gemma adds.
