Whilst carrying forward its previous legacy and charmed heritage, Malvern House is extended to the rear to create a sequence of generous and connected zones. Cassandra Walker Design takes distinct cues from the detailing of the old and reinterprets the interior style through a more contemporary and refined lens.

Maintaining its modest interaction with the streetscape, Malvern House is expanded to the rear but appears untouched from approach. Through a series of calculated formal motions across the site, the addition sits behind the original home and draws social activities further into the site. The new works aim to balance a more modern liveability with the rich layering of historic details. The resulting home unfolds with a similar grace as the original structure and Cassandra Walker Design ensures a sense of grandiosity is experienced across the site.

Set among similar era homes, all of comparable scale and stateliness, the preservation of the façade was key in keeping the rhythm of the streetscape. Malvern House combines a traditional approach with innovative and contemporary insertions, bringing the home into a new relevance whilst allowing the original character to remain. Drawing inspiration from a nature-led palette, the focus on rich and enduring materials acts as an extension of the refined outer shell. In redefining the home, the team is preparing for the future whilst ensuring the existing narrative continues.

Externally, the subtlety of the selected grey trim frames yet softens the outer edges of the architecture. Bringing that same design language inside, framed portals in thin black metal and glass allow the new volumes to connect and be fully opened or closed. As a counter to the rich red tones of the original brick, the introduction of deeper hues starts a conversation of contrast. Whilst a mostly muted palette forms the base, these bolder colour choices create immersive moments. The reorientation of the main living spaces then optimises natural ventilation and light and creates opportunities for an enhanced indoor-outdoor connection.

Malvern House emerges as a reinvigorated form that respects its heritage elements yet is elevated for a contemporary liveability. Focusing on high-quality finishes and timeless forms, Cassandra Walker Design reinterprets the existing geometries and nuanced moments to create a home that delicately blurs the old and new.
