As a fusion of spaces, Marrickville Warehouse combines an industrial base with refined detailing, creating a place to gather and work that is the ideal blank canvas for ideation. Adele McNab Architecture embeds a fluid functionality throughout, layering a unique narrative that binds the structure’s spaces.

Sited in the inner Sydney suburb of the same name, Marrickville Warehouse is a multi-use project. An existing warehouse space, an overlayed sense of rigor is felt through the new insertions – additional production and storage areas, a new showroom and a dedicated kitchen. As both a place of production and work, the new areas are intended to inspire and act as a non-distracting base from which to create. Adele McNab Architecture’s use of differing shades of grey provides a framework of flexibility, allowing the spaces to bleed into one another or be individually utilised.

Home to a butcher supplies company, the space had a multi-functional brief from the outset, needing to accommodate staff, guests, a showroom, storage and production. Through the new works, added depth is brought to the original industrial shell through a considered detailing and the crispness of new custom pieces. Spread over two levels, the addition of a mezzanine level and an open balustrade ensure clear visual connections between the upper and lower floors, and increased transparency vertically – reinforcing the idea of multi-functionality.

The dismantling of plaster walls throughout allows the showcasing of exposed concrete, highlighting a raw and elemental approach. Despite the potentially cavernous nature of the space, moments of intimacy and focused workspaces are created through lighting and the curation of furniture and partition systems. Although the spaces are loosely defined, each feel connected through a hum of animation that spreads throughout. Culminating in the kitchen space, natural light is brought in through translucent polycarbonate walls and light wells above.

What started as a study of materials and their endurance resulted in Marrickville Warehouse – a deeply functional and welcoming series of spaces. Adele McNab Architecture has crafted a consciously considered design that brings contrasting elements together with ease.
