Modern Classics collection by Knoll is an exploration of modernist design and contemporary relevance.
Knoll, founded in 1938 by Hans and Florence Knoll, has a far-reaching portfolio of pieces that leave a lasting impression. The Modern Classics collection, now available from dedece, brings together icons of modernist design that are as relevant today as they were pioneering and innovative at the time of their release.
A noteworthy piece in the collection is the Platner Side Chair, designed in 1966 by Warren Platner. The wire-framed dining or guest chair is considered an icon of mid-century modern design; its gentle shape is created by welding curved steel rods to circular frames, hailing both functionality and design. In 2016, after celebrating 50 years, the Side Chair was made available in an 18-karat gold finish.
Another Modern Classic by Knoll is Marcel Breuer’s Cesca Chair. Marcel, born in Hungary, was trained in Germany under Walter Gropius. He paved the way to using traditional furnishing craftsmanship with industrial methods – the combination propelled tubular steel furnishings to become an iconic element of modern design.
Knoll channels a Bauhaus design philosophy, believing that modern furniture should be both functional and modest, harmonising with the architectural space it inhabits.
The Barcelona Chair, designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Lilly Reich in 1929, uses a single piece of stainless steel in its frame. Its upholstery is made from 120 individual, handsewn panels. Similarly, the Barcelona Daybed, which is available in approximately 300 leather colours, is also handsewn. The Daybed is crafted using a combination of foam, metal and timber – the hardwood frame is made from African Ramin and finished with a protective lacquer. Ludwig Mies van der Rohe is the MR Chaise Lounge, crafted in 1929 and timeless in its design, is also available through Knoll’s collection.
The Saarinen Tulip Side Table is celebrated for its simplistic and sleek design. Available in round and oval tops, the Side Table is the achievement of Finish designer Eero Saarinen. The base of the table is generated from a weighty aluminium; the tabletop is available in multiple finishes, including timber, marble and laminate. The table can easily be aesthetically paired with the Saarinen Tulip Chairs from the Pedestal Collection.
Knoll channels a Bauhaus design philosophy, believing that modern furniture should be both functional and modest, harmonising with the architectural space it inhabits. “Knoll is renowned for its refined aesthetic that challenges the status quo,” says dedece Co-Founder, Tim Engelen. “Offering clean lines and an elegant aesthetic, Knoll continues to represent more than just form and function, rising to a level of pure art. As icons of modernist design, Knoll carves its place in design history, delivering a suite of exquisite furniture pieces for every room of the home.” This attitude has remained with Knoll for over 80 years and, with it, helped maintain a quality of design unmatched.
