Redefining the typical gallery experience, OTOMYS sees a reworking of the familiar, taking on a refreshing and light-focused approach that centres around engagement and openness. Georgina Jeffries works closely with the gallery directors to propose a uniquely welcoming and affable space that embraces new connections.

Located in the heart of Prahran, OTOMYS relocated from its previous Richmond locale. Responding to the need to retain both a physical and digital relevance, the switch to a street presence afforded an opportunity of easy access to the gallery’s offerings and strengthens its bonds with artists and collectors. Taking occupancy in the lower level of a newly completed building by John Wardle Architects, Georgina Jeffries helps carve an anchored presence for the contemporary gallery that is approachable and open to the surrounds. The space becomes an active contributor to the lively nature of the streetscape whilst also being a refined and calming respite from the bustling surrounds.

Celebrating the idea of community and breaking down barriers to the art world, the space becomes the physical embodiment of the gallery’s ethos. Whilst the white walls are synonymous with a gallery experience, they are combined with character-rich detailing that grounds the space. Ensuring the incorporation of natural light was key to the ensuing approach, allowing the artworks to engage with the changing seasons and reflect the encompassing context. A base palette of restraint underpins the space, allowing the artwork to remain the focus.

Currently showcasing the work of Julia Roche, the dream-like paintings offer a place of departure. The soft and muted colourings subtly add a sense of movement despite being contained within a bounding frame. Stretching upward to 4.5 metres, the gallery is a combination of both open and closed areas, with the glass façade an expression of an open and engaged stance. Wanting to invite conversations with new artists and to be an approachable and comfortable location, elements of residential spaces soften the project and enhance a welcoming feel.

Enriched and full of personality, OTOMYS is a contemporary commercial gallery with a signature approach. Georgina Jeffries creates a comfortable and inviting atmosphere, ensuring flexibility and congeniality to infuse the project.
