Through opening up and injecting floods of natural light into the existing Edwardian-era home, Park Residence becomes a fresh and enlivened contemporary version of its former self. Georgina Jeffries combines a softened touch with muted sensibilities to propose a home of continued charm and character.
Nestled into Melbourne’s inner east, Park Residence takes its name from its immersion within such an enveloping and lush landscape setting. As a continuation of the home’s existing formality, elements from the embedded Edwardian-era character are carried forward, restored and reinterpreted, allowing the home to feel modern and embracing of the contemporary home vernacular. The familiar highly detailed and ornate elements at the front of the home are animated from the entry and slowly open up to a shared kitchen and dining space that openly engages with the rear garden. At every opening, snippets of the garden beyond are brought inward through framed vistas, softening the interior. Georgina Jeffries ensures a continued lineage of the home’s past through classical references in the new, allowing the narrative to feel seamless.
Inlaid patterned elements in the flooring add an element of animation, with the entry brought to life with a geometric rhythm of monochromatic marble tiles and the herringbone timber pattern carrying through, binding the old and new underfoot.
Built by Tykon, together with landscaping by Kate Patterson, Park Residence takes cues from the history of the home and refines these through a considered filter, to inspire the new. Embracing the techniques and honed skilled earned to mould the end result, the muted palette and select tones conjure a whimsical sensibility. A playful palette of similar hues, soft greens, washed timber and olive tones set the base. Calm and quaint, every detail is considered, and through a curated eye, furniture and custom joinery add further layers to each space, while capturing the personality of its owners in the process. New elements share a similar expression of craft through the handmade, where junctions and patina are celebrated as a marked appreciation of time and how age adds to the narrative of a home. A careful balance of clean lines and emphasised natural veining in stone is countered by the imposed patterns and contemporary embellishments throughout.
