Portsea Residence
Portsea Residence by Melbourne-based Fluent Studio is a considered reimagining of a 1970s coastal home, conceived as a place for both large-scale entertaining and private retreat.
Set on a steep and challenging site, the project remains wholly within its existing footprint. “The original home had incredible bones, and rather than extending or overhauling, we chose to work entirely within the existing footprint as a deliberate act of design restraint,” explains Fluent Studio director Karina Harvey.
The reconfiguration establishes distinct zones for active and restful living while strengthening the connection to natural light and the surrounding landscape. In doing so, it improves comfort and functionality, with a flexible floor plan that allows the home to shift seamlessly between quiet, private moments and social gatherings.
Key original features, including timber-lined ceilings, cedar beams and expansive glazing, have been retained to anchor the home’s character. In the kitchen, marble surfaces pair with cream-toned timber veneer joinery to create balance and symmetry. Considered details, such as elevated joinery kick boards, make the kitchen feel almost lightweight, like furniture, underscoring the home’s laid-back spirit.
The revised plan introduces two separate sleeping wings for privacy, while circulation is enhanced by an external stair that links the upper level to the pool, sundeck and lower living areas. Upstairs, the living zone forms a quiet, cocoon-like retreat. Downstairs, the social heart of the home is defined by a dramatic double-height void that feels expansive despite the modest footprint. A custom angular fireplace adds sculptural interest to the volume, and artwork by Sara Winfield provides the finishing touch to the composition.
Much of the dwelling’s distinctive character stems from Harvey’s intuitive approach to materiality and atmosphere. “Materiality played a huge role,” she explains. “Every finish was chosen to be both expressive and enduring. Warm timbers, bronze accents, soft marbles – all layered in a way that feels effortless but deeply intentional.” Bedrooms feature walnut joinery and sheer curtains that softly filter light, creating a warm and calming retreat. Bathrooms carry through the same material language for visual continuity, combining form and function.
Portsea Residence emerges as a refined and adaptable coastal retreat. By working within the original footprint and honouring its 1970s character, Fluent Studio has crafted a home that embraces seasonal shifts and supports the varied rhythms of daily life.
