When approaching the redesign of a dated family residence in Toorak, Lauren Tarrant Design drew inspiration from Mediterranean living, blending this laid-back approach with a sense of luxury and sophistication that aligns with the locale. As a result, the home feels light, spacious and connected to the outdoors.
Reconstructing the home to create an open-plan layout facilitates better movement and space, complemented by the expansive floor-to-ceiling windows that flood the interior with natural light. Incorporating organic elements, such as a curved island bench, a rounded fireplace and spiral staircase, infuses the space with allure and balance, while curated finishes evoke an air of effortless luxury.
Toorak Californian prominently showcases natural materials throughout, integrating a blend of natural stone such as Travertine, Smeraldo and Vagli sourced from Artedomus. The furnishings are kept minimal, mainly characterised by a neutral colour palette. These furnishings, alongside the raw materials, are accentuated by considered detailing, such as soft linen curtains and ceramics, complemented by eye-catching pendant lighting, greenery and art pieces.
A seamless integration between indoor and outdoor spaces is a central aspect of the home’s rejuvenation. The open-plan living area extends into the garden, featuring a pool and expansive courtyard. Large windows provide picturesque views of the lush greenery and the pool outside, and a kitchen window replaces the traditional splashback, offering views of the garden. Mature canopy also lines the perimeter of the garden, enveloping the space in greenery while offering a sense of privacy and retreat. Lauren Tarrant Design achieves a harmonious and contemporary dwelling that seamlessly merges with Toorak’s architectural style, yet its calm and tranquil palette almost makes one feel miles away.
