Riverside emerges as a spacious and richly storied family home on New York’s Upper West Side, where two apartments combine into a singular, expanded residence. Blending historic charm with contemporary elements, the dwelling embodies both past and present-day aesthetics.

Within the facades of many New York apartment buildings lies a rich tapestry of histories, both of the edifices themselves and the individuals who once called them home. Originally built in 1908, Riverside occupies a distinguished Beaux-Arts structure that retains many original French influences, serving as the foundation for its contemporary rejuvenation. Purchasing the neighbouring apartment and drawing upon their successful collaboration with Bespoke Only on a previous project, the owners entrusted the team to honour the building’s historical character while crafting a living space suited to their family’s lifestyle. This transformation makes way for a spacious five-bedroom, four-bathroom residence, delineated into distinct wings surrounding a central living area.

The resulting home radiates a timeless charm, marrying tradition with modern allure.

The process involved removing walls as well as a shared hallway to facilitate an internal expansion and improved flow. It was important to create a sense of continuous connection between the two apartments, emphasising seamless transitions between spaces. At the heart of the home, the newly reimagined kitchen serves as a hub for preparation, gathering and socialising. Drawing inspiration from the city, elements such as subway-style tiles and gilded accents guided the selection of materials and colour palette.

The original timber-clad library serves as a cornerstone, setting the tone for the integration of craftsmanship and handmade details throughout the abode. This immersive space exudes a comforting warmth, enveloping occupants in its embrace. Sage and olive hues were identified and seamlessly woven into interior, bridging the gap between old and new in a subtle manner, all while maintaining a focus on spaciousness. Highlighting views of the Hudson River was key, as was creating a sense of stillness within, reinforcing the home as a sanctuary.

By revitalising the home’s historical roots, Bespoke Only elevates the character of Riverside. The sense of openness and generosity created by the designer provides ample space for the existing pre-war detailing to shine alongside more modern elements.
