Simple Sample, which has just launched, is an online marketplace for sourcing A&D material samples in Australia. The free service is available to architects, designers and other building industry professionals who can order a selection of samples from a range of brands and get them delivered in one box.
Grounded in sustainability, Simple Sample’s offering is inspired by the collective shift towards more conscious and responsible design practices. Currently, suppliers send out thousands of samples every month, creating not only large amounts of material waste and emissions, but relying heavily on plastic packaging. Simple Sample has responded by consolidating multiple deliveries of samples from different companies into a single box – saving in both packaging and carbon emissions. “We wanted to make it effortless for suppliers and A&D professionals to play their part in reducing unnecessary packaging and minimising the environmental impacts of transport and shipping,” says a Simple Sample spokesperson.

Noticing the lack of efficiency in both the time and cost involved in arranging samples, Simple Sample focused on finding a way to streamline an outdated process. For suppliers, the cost of picking, packing and delivery – where sales representatives are often delivering the products in person – can be extremely high. The new brand’s concept means there’s less administrative burden and an increased focus on building relationships with clients and suppliers. “Simple Sample is a game-changer as it saves us so much time in finding the best suppliers, and also means we can get samples reliably in a single delivery,” says Lucas Lau, Principal at LAX Architects, a Melbourne-based practice that has delivered multiple award-winning projects.
The new brand has already garnered the support of many of Australia’s leading architects and designers – ranging from national practices with large sample libraries to smaller firms. “It’s great to see so many leaders in the space interested in changing how sampling is done and willing to try a new way of doing things,” says the Simple Sample spokesperson. “We’re excited to continue growing our network and want to speak to more suppliers about how we can help them and the industry at large.”
