Uniquely responding to the existing architectural surrounds, Shingle Roof House instils a handcrafted ethos into the comprising elements of the newly conceived home. Fearon Hay plays with proportion and scale in coalescing the residence’s heritage and contemporary styles and allows for an active engagement with the landscape.

A generous home of just under 400 square metres, Shingle Roof House is spread over multiple levels and sees the created spaces harness togetherness. A contemporary interpretation of the traditional residences it sits among, the form takes inspiration from a collection of pre-existing styles in forming its own inimitable approach. The private family home combines natural references through materiality and texture and comes together to facilitate a personalised inner experience. Fearon Hay uses its highly crafted and refined rigour to propose a home that responds sympathetically to its surrounds.

Built by Contour Construction, Shingle Roof House sits within a carefully formalised landscape design. The balancing of the openings and apertures created within are reinforced by a landscape that anchors the home in place. Allowing fully uninterrupted access between inside and out, the lower level features thinly glazed folding doors that slide and blur the threshold to the outside. The façade also acts to support the movement through the site, allowing natural ventilation to cool the spaces throughout the day. As a balancing between privacy and enclosure, and being connected both internally and between inside and out, mechanisms and shutters allow the directing of natural light.

Located in Auckland, the home’s proposal utilises similar principles to the surrounding streetscape. Centred around a style focused on experimentation and craft, signature features and detailing ensure a handmade and artisanal embodiment. The residence’s approach combines carefully engineered solutions with a less typified process of how forms, openings and spaces interact across the site.

An expression of craft and passion, Shingle Roof House is the embodiment of handcrafted design. Fearon Hay turns the expected on its head to propose a home of true character and charm.
