Southern Highlands House, a generous residence by Emma Lee Architecture and Handelsmann + Khaw, sits comfortably in the expansive natural surrounds of East Kangaloon, New South Wales. Together, the architect and interior designer craft an immersive retreat imbued with contemporary touches that match the open, calm nature of the original residence.

Located in an uninterrupted landscape, Southern Highlands House stands as a testament to its context. Spread over multiple floors, the various functions of the home are brought together to create a familiar and considered design. The combination of charm, character and elevated detailing ensures the comforts of the residence are felt entirely throughout. The revitalised design sees the residence connect effortlessly to the landscape yet remain a place of shelter and retreat.

Known for its lush landscape and tranquil offering, the Southern Highlands is the ideal place to craft a sanctuary disconnected from the world. Countering the bustle of urban life, the dwelling contrasts inner-suburban offerings and, instead, focuses on honing outward connections. The resulting home becomes a place of warmth and safety where one can experience a cocooning effect. Combining elements from both the existing cottage and newly extended form, the restoration embraces the old and new through a curation of select furniture, artwork and lighting.

By opening up the interior spaces, they become naturally illuminated and more generous in scale. The extended deck also allows for large family gatherings whilst offering sweeping vistas of the surrounding landscape. The surrounds play a vital role in buffering the residence and the site, thanks to a series of features in the updated landscape design that provides room for meandering. Inspired by nature, the home’s palette is based on neutral tones, allowing newly introduced tiling, textiles, furniture and window coverings to seamlessly add nuanced moments of curiosity and playfulness.

An homage to the natural beauty of the area, Southern Highlands House combines an openness that encourages engagement. By framing views outward and directing movement throughout the abode, Emma Lee Architecture and Handelsmann + Khaw ensure the experience of the home remains connected to the narrative of the area.
