Set within generous surrounds, Sullivan Townhouse sees SPAN Architecture and White Arrow bring forward the original grandeur and scale of the home into a more contemporary context. Together, the architect and designer pay homage to the historical significance of the dwelling, which was previously owned by the family after whom the street is named.

SPAN Architecture and White Arrow undertake the renovation of Sullivan Townhouse with a focus on preserving its historical significance and ensuring the continuation of its legacy. Located in Soho in New York City, the residence itself received landmark status in the 1970s, capturing a moment in time that characterises the fabric of the neighbourhood. Striving to create a sophisticated, light-filled, refined and layered home, the approach seamlessly blends tradition with functionality. Across the nine impressive bedrooms and five and a half bathrooms, the vertical space on each level of Sullivan Townhouse is maximised to enhance a sense of proportion and volume. SPAN Architecture and White Arrow redefine the interior, crafting a unique expression of personality that incorporates storied pieces throughout.

“The townhouse is home to a blended family who moved into the home with divergent interior design styles and interests,” describes Keren Richter, Co-Founder of White Arrow. “We aimed to find a common thread between what they owned and what would be new, as well as figuring out furniture placement, sourcing and commissioning bespoke pieces with the right scale, proportion and design language for the grand townhouse.” The living and dining spaces play crucial roles, not only in their connection to natural light but also in their proximity to the lush garden they overlook. The meticulous craftsmanship and inclusion of handmade elements is the result of a series of intentional choices. The interplay of light on the reflective coffee table and other surfaces introduces a sense of reflectivity and movement into the space.

Although it is not a standalone dwelling, the interior boasts an impressive size while maintaining a subtle integration into the tapestry of New York City. “We love the loft-like living room and dining room’s expansiveness and its views,” adds Keren. “There is such a feeling of openness, yet [the space] still feels comfortable, warm and well-appointed.” While a bold spirit permeates the design of the home, a muted foundation serves as a constant thread throughout the levels, emphasising the necessity for timelessness in a building with such historical significance.
