Elevated above Vancouver city, Sunset Flat captures both expansive views and expression of the owners’ personalities. Falken Reynolds layers nostalgic elements within the quaint occasional dwelling, offering a means for the occupants to feel grounded and at home whilst in town.

The modern apartment building rises upward and optimises on the surrounding aspect. As the dwelling is one of the places the owners call home – their other residence is in Shanghai –ensuring the spaces reflected both them and the location was paramount. The approach to the design is one that emphasises natural light and a connection with the surrounds, and the more immersive and darker tones of retreat areas. Throughout, views outward remain unimpeded by Falken Reynolds to ensure a reminder of context remains, and each contributing element is secondary to this focus.

Looking out over both English Bay and False Creek, the apartment is lifted up and away from the bustle below to create an immediate sense of disconnection and escape. From the entry, a feeling of openness is created, with long-stretching views connecting outward – an approach carried throughout the remainder of the spaces within the home. Drawing you in immediately is the marble-clad kitchen island that becomes its own sculptural moment, anchoring itself as a pivotal point for entertaining, nurturing, socialising and decompressing. Through the use of natural materials, textural depth, tactility and tone play vital roles in bringing a unique personality and identity to the home.

As a private space that needed to feel like an extension of the owners, it retains a connection to the city whilst introducing elements that add a personal touch. There is a playfulness to the home and in how the spaces fold into one another – each space features an element of the unexpected. Handmade, light, geometric furniture pieces and intriguing artworks sit atop the muted base palette to stir moments of curiosity and connect the owners to their unique story.

With the passing seasons and weather changes animating its background, Sunset Flat remains true to its name. Balancing decorative insertions with a grounded base, Falken Reynolds ensures a safe and immersive landing pad for the owners when they are in town.
