TASS: Redefining the Design and Build Experience
TASS is changing how homes are designed and built, offering a wraparound service that centres on the customer experience to create homes that are individual, authentic and grounded.
A holistic approach to design is the bedrock of TASS, a Sydney architecture and building company that puts customer experience at the centre of its practice. TASS brings together architecture and construction for a fully integrated service that eliminates the sticking points often associated with working with multiple companies on different elements of a project – and is one of just a few New South Wales practices with both registered architects and licensed builders.
As designers who build and builders who design, and by working as one team towards one result, TASS offers a seamless experience that redefines construction. This approach has recently seen the company nominated as a national finalist for both the 2025 HIA Emerging Builder of the Year and 2025 HIA Professional Builder of the Year awards.
TASS’s architects, interior designers, builders, estimators and site managers bring their joint expertise to every project to create homes that fuse the design and construction processes. As challenges arise, every team member can offer their unique expertise and perspective to find a resolution. “A single avenue of accountability and a shared goal create a seamless, transparent and expedited process – streamlining communication, reducing risks and strengthening our ability to innovate,” says Aaron Tass, who co-founded the company with his brother Ben. “The result is homes that inspire, built to the highest standards, delivered on time and within budget and with no unexpected surprises.”
While customer experience during the design and construction process is central to the approach, so, too, is the experience of living in a TASS home. The company works closely with each client to imagine and bring to life a home that reveals the individuality of its residents, which balances form and function and which will evolve. “We create spaces that stir emotions, inspire and foster connections between people and place,” says Ben Tass. “Our homes are made to be lived in, cherished and remembered, evolving with clients as they celebrate life in its most authentic form.”
Emblematic of the company’s distinctive approach is its Marrickville project, a striking home in Sydney’s inner west that brought together three existing structures into one residence. The TASS team entirely overhauled the buildings – including every floor, wall and ceiling – while retaining heritage elements such as the hallmark Sydney terrace facade and using them as cues for the rest of the home. These features blend seamlessly with the contemporary architecture, manifested in exposed concrete ceilings and floor-to-ceiling windows and doors that pull light in throughout the expansive home.
“We were focused on creating a consistency throughout the spaces while also honouring the heritage elements.”
“We integrated three very different residential tenancies, with three very different energies, to create a lovely, simple family home that ticked all the boxes,” says TASS interior designer Maddie Wallace. “We were focused on creating a consistency throughout the spaces while also honouring the heritage elements.”
The needs and lifestyle of the clients, a young family, were at the forefront of the design and construction process. It’s a residence built for large-scale entertaining, including a showstopping four-metre kitchen island, a pool and an entertainment system that facilitates parties with an LED strip-lighting system and disco ball. Quiet moments are catered to with a library and reading room, five bedrooms and a guest retreat. TASS’s trademark attention to detail is woven through every element, from the Franke tapware and ZETR power points to flooring from Havwoods.
The hub of the home is the ultra-generous open-plan living area, defined by a striking bulkhead that “makes a feature of the existing ceiling but is also a feature in itself,” says Wallace. “It’s also very strategic as it hides a lot of the structural elements.” Curved lines, polished surfaces and feature lighting contribute to the space’s sense of calm and poise, with large-scale glazing opening to the outdoor entertaining area and pool beyond. “We wanted to evoke a feeling of a family home while having really interesting details that are unique to the client, reflecting their personality and lifestyle,” says Wallace. “We wanted to create something that would grow with them as well.”
They’re hallmarks of every carefully considered home that TASS creates, residences where “life is lived, memories are made and every moment is anchored in the spaces that surround you,” says Ben.
